So, Whatever Happened to Fafhrd and Greymouser?

Gary and Fritz were friends. They corresponded, and even met on a few occasions. Fritz even played a few games of D&D in the early days. The two agreed on a Lankhmar setting for D&D fairly quickly. It was when Gary got booted from TSR than the company lost the lankhmar license. Because, in case you're wondering, it was a private agreement between two friends, not between Lieber and TSR.

Yeah, Dark Horse Comics is re-rereleasing the Lankhmar books. I think Book 2 is coming out in March or April.

When you say "books," do you mean the short story collections or the comics? Mike Mignola did the comic adaptations of a couple of the stories through Epic Comics back in the early '90s...I'd love to get a TPB of those. My issues are old and worn-out, and I fear for their continued existence.

EDIT: Nevermind, I looked it up on the website. Looks like they are doing both, which is awesome news. There's also mention of a movie property, which I have mixed feelings about.

I hope Dark Horse makes it all the way through the short stories. Reprint series always seem to peter out before the end, and I've been waiting to read the last few stories ever since White Wolf did a reprint series a few years back (and if they put out the last book, it never showed up in any stores I could find).

I don't think Dark Horse will fail since it's got the revenue for it. But we'll see.

Me I think Fafhrd and Grey Mouser both went on vacation for a while with Death. ;)

I really love these stories! The banter between these two heroes was great. I have the old paperbacks & two of the White Wolf reprints. Thanks Maester Luwin

This is sword and sorcery as it was meant to be.
What stuns me most is that, when I recommend these books to my D&D group for being both awesome and one of Gygax's original inspirations, I get "Enh" at best.

And then they extol me on the virtues of Driz'zt and Star Wars novels. :\

Are you sure about that?

I have several 2E Lankhmar books which were created long after Gary was gone from TSR.

There is no accounting for taste, sadly enough.

Personally, while I came to Fafhrd & Grey Mouser late in life, I was always a Lieber fan...

And while I've a dragon's hoard of books, both classic sci/fant and new, I have yet to personally add a "franchise" book to the library. (Some have been gifted to me, though.)

The books are older. They are shorter. They are written more... well, having a good grasp of the English language wouldn't hurt. Lots of words used that have fallen out of common use.

Drizz't and Star Wars also have the benefit of being pretty heavily supported. The latter obviously far more than the former. Players have numerous windows into the characters.

Heck, I know people who can't stand Conan but love Wheel of Time.
