As for the 3.5 Ranger, I give it a big thumbs sideways. It looks like they solved a couple of problems re: frontloading, and the good Ref save is a good call, but they could have solved the biggest problem by getting rid of the virtual feats. Now, instead of getting one dumb virtual, you have a choice of a couple. Big whoop. Honestly, anyone I know who would play a ranger would have taken those feats anyway, without the no-heavy-armor strings attached.

I'm not sure I understand why you are against the Ranger's virtual feats. Could you elaborate?

Just so you know, a Ranger was never meant to me a heavy (or medium) armored "fighter". So the restrictions are there to enforce that reason.

If you want to make a medium/heavy armored TWFighter/Archer, well that is what the Fighter class if for...

Monk, no contest. Much cleaner rules for unarmed attacks, earlier Ki Strike and a choice of feats at places. Add in the clearer rules about monk weapons and the fact that you can cast magic fang on a creature to affect all its attacks and you can't go wrong with monks anymore.

I seconded that vote, for all the same reasons.

My earth genasi monk can't wait to convert.

I like all of them :)

Bards now stick out as THE generic class... light armor and some martial weapon prof for the fighting bards, lots of enchantments, illusions, divinations, cures and buffs for the caster in you, six skill points for rogueish endevaours, and bard songs for team-players.

Definite improvement.

There is exactly one degree of freedom when it comes to choosing your combat style. There are far too many combat styles to include them all in a list of feats, so WotC should have ditched them.

Oh well ... now those gnoll and grimlock rangers will still miss out on three feats :(

I had to vote with the Barbarian.

While some of the other changes are very nice, I might actually see a Barbarian get played all the way to level 20 in one of my games now. Before, the damage reduction came into play so late in life that no one stayed pure Barb... now that DR starts earlier and you can hold out for the incredible rage bonuses at the end of the career, I think our group might finally have a raging warrior that goes the distance.
