So, who's looking forward to 4E Forgotten Realms?

i am, albeit with some hesitation.
i loved the old realms and am hoping that someone (perhaps some of the candlekeep folks) will do a decent conversion for it... that being said, i am looking forward to the new changes, if only for the sake of curiosity.

Eberron for 4E looks to be a natural fit, and something that I am interested in seeing. Not least reason being that they aren't going to invalidate previous Eberron setting material like they did with FR.
And that, I think, is the point. 4E seems designed for Eberron, which is not my idea of D&D. I see Eberron as the new WotC flagship campaign. They plan to take the setting into 4th Edition without any major changes, while the Realms gets "buttmunched."

BTW, I wasn't that much of a fan of the 3rd Edition version of the Realms.

Do I think that WotC might be trying to kill interest in the Realms? Well, that might be taking it too far. But I'm sure they will support Eberron more than the Realms on D&D Insider as the years move forward. I doubt the Realms will ever be the "big dog" again. That is the role of Eberron, now, IMO.

WotC can deny it if they want, but I can feel the end coming for the Realms. It will go the way of Greyhawk and so many of the other great TSR settings of the past. And, yes, I'm aware that WotC plans to update many of the old setting for 4th Edition, but I ask you, "how can we know for sure what they'll do to those settings?"

What if they do to Dark Sun, Greyhawk, and Ravenloft what they're doing to the Forgotten Realms? Will that make fans of those older settings happy? Some of them, maybe, but more likely WotC will just piss 'em off. Dark Sun is one of my favorite setting and if they invalidate canon to shoehorn the campaign into the 4e ruleset, then I will very disappointed.

And don't even get me started on Planescape.

Cheers!

I'm looking forward to it. I found the current realms too canon heavy and I couldn't get into it. My preference for broad knowledge of a campaign world kept me at bay the last half of 3.x. Too much canon in the novels and I just couldn't keep up.

I like the RSE, and want to see the Realms anew.

I like the new realms. They're lighter - and I like gazetteer-style campaign books. The new Realms with the three books fits that. There is enough familiar stuff, as it seems, but with less of the things that came in through years of added canon and novels.

It's a lean and mean version of the Realms - I like that. I just hope it also turns out good.

Cheers, LT.

4E Realms will still have this problem. The novels make more money for WotC than the game books so, despite the restart, the world will soon be too complicated again.

The problem with FR is not what has been published in the game books- it's the constant flow of RSEs that are required to ensure that novels continue to sell.

I'm looking forward to 4E Realms for two different reasons:

1. I don't like the changes so it's a good excuse to get off the merry-go-round of keeping up with the changes and ensuring that my future FR campaigns are based off the 3E campaign setting book plus the word document on my hard drive that describes all major events since 1372 DR.

2. I'm really hoping that once WotC stops publishing FR game books that this will be sufficient to activate the clause in Ed's contract whereby ownership of the IP reverts to him. I would love to see Ed be able to publish FR via another publisher and for that version of FR to be untainted by novels.

Now that would be awesome.

I would "SO" buy that book.

I am very much looking forward to it. To me, a setting that doesn't change is just boring. I have trouble imagining the world as a living, breathing place if things don't change over time.

Yep, looking forward to release. I'm excited that people will finally get to play the adventure I'm writing. Can't wait to see how people like the new Realms once they've seen them.

FR is doing just fine and I highly doubt Wotc is dumb enough to just let it revert back to Ed. They've invested way to much in it.

In fact the next huge OP campaign for the RPGA is based in the Realms. We had our largest offering for a campaign kickoff (or Gencon schedule really). A total of 4,518 LFR tickets went on sale June 1st at noon and lasted hours. All gone. So FR seems to still have a very strong following.
