Social Conflict In Space - STARGUILD Is Space Opera Noir

For the past few years, Alex White (who you may know as Plane Sailing on the forums) has been working on his science fiction roleplaying game, Starguild. It's described as "space opera noir" and heavily features intrigue and social conflict - as well as laser guns and spaceships, of course. Last week, Alex launched a Kickstarter to fund production of the - already written - game. He has kindly sent along some exclusive previews of the rulebook; take a look at these, and then be sure to head over to the Kickstarter itself and take an even longer look at that!

That cover art is by Claudio Pozas (who has worked for most every major RPG company around!) The previews below give a sense of the game, but some of the Kickstarter's goals are to get more colour art.

The game itself is reportedly a light d20 mechanic; it's not the d20 system - no classes, for a start - but I've heard mention that those who have played d20 games will find it very easy to play. One of its biggest features - as I alluded to above - is the system for social conflict. The Kickstarter itself says "...the game treats social conflict - the ability to alter someones emotions and thinking - just as importantly as the more traditional kinds of conflict of fist and gun. There are many ways that adventurers can achieve their objectives, including manipulating their friends and allies should the need arise." These social conflict mechanics are made up of abilities to Captivate, Convince, Dissemble, Peacemake, Seduce, Sow Distrust, Swindle and Taunt.

Three ability scores - Passion, Intellect, and Physique - and eight skills make up the core of a character, plus a background, talent, and homeworld.

The 240-page book also includes five adventures, each of which highlights a different aspect of the game. You can get the PDF for £10, or the hardcover for £35.

Wanted to pop over and lend my voice to the chorus of support, Alex! I jumped on this Kickstarter on Day 1 and I'm quite looking forward to seeing the final product.

For those reading and on the fence, I've had the pleasure of playing in several Starguild games over the years and it has always been a fantastic experience. Watching Alex carry the game to the point of being able to share it with the world has been tremendous fun.

I'm quite fortunate to count Alex as a friend and we both do our best to attend an annual house-con here in the US. The first year I went I played in his game mostly because he seemed like a really nice guy and I wanted to see how he ran games. I'll never forget it because it was one of the most brilliant and brave displays of game mastering I'll ever witness. There were four different factions of diplomats, gathered on board a space station, each faction with different goals, some of which differed from the goals of the characters of that faction! Over that he laid a bit of card trading game where we could swap promises of resources from various worlds our factions controlled.

All of that would have been amazing and ambitious enough, but this was against a backdrop of creeping dread as an alien presence began to gradually take over the space station. Eventually we were forced to make a desperate flight, not knowing who we could trust in the first place, further complicated by the takeover of the alien virus. The finale was suitably thrilling and packed with skulduggery of the highest order.

At the end of the game I shook Alex's hand to tell him what an incredible job he'd done and asked him about the system only to be further impressed that he'd designed it himself. Since then I've played in his games several times and it is truly impressive how he manages to keep a consistent theme (Who can you trust? Can we all survive this without working together? Can my character survive and meet their personal goals?) while showcasing a broad array of settings and scenarios.

If I sound like I'm gushing, it's because I am. Alex is the kind of fundamentally decent human being I hope to see succeed in all his endeavors. But, aside from all that, he's created a really fun game that tackles complex ideas with elegance and excitement. I'd encourage anybody to give it a look to see if it sounds like their sort of game.

Thanks Scott!

I ought to mention that the basic 'diplomats on a space station' is one of the adventures which I have included in the rules. It doesn't have the trading resources element which I included in the convention game, and has the principle characters stated up as NPCs in this occasion, but per wise contains all the key elements of that adventure.

If anyone likes the sound of this kind of adventure, I'd be happy to answer any questions about how the rules support those kinds of game.

Cheers

A new stretch goal has been announced - do you think we can reach it in the next five days and make it better for everyone?

Adventures in the Underbelly provides more details on the derelict noncit zones, the illegal cybernetic and psionic research that goes on there and the people who hunt them down. It will also contain two sets of linked adventures around those themes.

Hi everyone

Just wanted to say that my Kickstarter is inside its last three days in case you fancy taking a look at it or backing it. That's just three more days when you can get input into the background of the world, and even get one (or maybe two) additional PDFs bundled in too!

The most recent update is an example from the social conflict pages

Cheers

Last two hours before the Kickstarter closes... tick, tick, tick!

If you find this thread after the kickstarter closes, let me know... I'll happily put you on a mailing list for announcements about the game.

Cheers!
