This is just a guess, but there was talk earlier my morrus that later there would be some feature where you could see recent activity by people on your friends list. this might be the start of that getting setup.

Edit: Adding credibility to my above theory is the fact now that if you go to a userpage, it has a new tab called "newsfeed" so social newsfeed probably does pull from the newsfeeds of your friends.

Update: After a bit of waiting for some activity, I can confirm that the "Social Networking" link does in fact show you recent activity (threads/posts/updates/etc) that people on your friends list have done.

And you can change the settings as to what your friends see of your own activity on thier social networking list by clicking on the settings link in that same social networking screen.
