About the LGs using Detect Evil to kill those that ping evil: I would think those that show up as faint (an evil 1st level commoner) would probably be prime "redemption" candidates. Instead of killing them, the LGs would try to show them the error of thier ways and convert them to a more good alignment.

Those that show a more potent evil aura (Evil Clerics and Undead/Outsiders) would get the Holy Word treatment. They are not redeemable and society is better served by eliminating them.

Just had a mental image of a Paladin holding up a colour chart to decide wether the miscreants aura deserved a stern talking to, a sound thrashing, or decapitation.....

Of course, if he's a PC paladin, he probably uses the "Kill em all, let my god sort em out" philosophy.
