Societies and Alignment Detection

I believe, though, that one could use Nystul's Magic Aura to apply an appropriately Evil aura to any object, and then Misdirection to shift that aura to the Paladin.

Hmm... yeah, that should work - 'a magic item of a kind you specify' or 'subject of a spell you specify' could both net you an Evil aura.

So, sure, the 1st level commoners are all gonna get caught. But all the higher-level folks who actually have the skills and ability to cause real mischief seem to have the ability to do so if they have the desire.
No, 1st level commoners do not register on Detect Evil by the RAW.

If I played RAW though, i'd create LN empires with LN paladin variants
And then no longer playing RAW.

Want to stop alignment hiding magic cold? Try having a Town gate with a Forbidance spell going from a cleric {it lasts forever]. At least 6d6 everytime someone who was not your alignment passes through. The guards, of course, have Improved Bull Rush

Aren't the alternative paladins in the DMG? Either way its a WOTC std variant so its virtually RAW.

Still think LN is the right choice for a truly scary paladin regardless.....

Nope. Unearthed Arcana has variants for LE, CG and CE 'paladins'. Also, I think Dragon had variants for 'paladins' of all alignments just after 3.5e was released (#310 and #312). But I don't recall seeing a LN 'paladin' from WotC.

My bad, got confused between the 4 UA variant's and a LN variant i'd seen "somewhere" else

A Fighter/Cleric of St Cuthbert? Or even just a Cleric of St Cuthbert?

Or just go with that LN 'paladin' variant. There's no harm in adding such a thing for your campaign, you know. :)

Thanks for the clarification, Misdirection did its job by confusing me. That makes Magic Aura a lot more interesting. I was using it only to hide magic items.

About the LGs using Detect Evil to kill those that ping evil: I would think those that show up as faint (an evil 1st level commoner) would probably be prime "redemption" candidates. Instead of killing them, the LGs would try to show them the error of thier ways and convert them to a more good alignment.

Those that show a more potent evil aura (Evil Clerics and Undead/Outsiders) would get the Holy Word treatment. They are not redeemable and society is better served by eliminating them.
