Would you guys really allow a paladin to challenge himself??

Perhaps he challenges himself because he thinks he is so righteously powerful that he needs a handicap in order to even the odds. Perhaps he challenges himself because he can only truely know the suffering of those he saves by inflicting it upon himself. Perhaps he is just a Paladin of Masochism.

Sure, tons of great RP reasons to challenge yourself.

Of course, the DM still has the targetting rules in the DMG to deny it, fairly easily (it's not a threatening target/enemy that is triggering the beneficial effect of the healing surge)

And, I mean, yay, burning surges, but yeah, bit silly.

Nope, not me.

Sure, it's nice to have the rules to back me up as far as bursts targeting the source, but even if I didn't, that's what DMs are for. :)

I concur. Also, I would rule that you can't end your turn adjacent to yourself, which would also cause the paladin some problems if he wanted to keep his divine challenge on himself.

Even if the Divine Challenge could be used to target yourself, this STILL doesn't work.

As I recall, it has been specified that a target must present a realistic threat for a power to work. Unless you are suicidal, you do not present a realistic challenge to yourself and cannot mark/challenge yourself.

In other words, no bag-o-rats in 4E.

This means you can't use it to challenge your party members either.

I'd allow it had I not been reminded that it's illegal. I definitely would have ruled that you're not adjacent to yourself, so he'd have to use it or lose it. but I don't see it as that big of a power boost. Paladins already have a bunch of Lay on Hands uses to heal themselves. If you've run out of those, the leader has no heals, and you're so desperate that you're challenging yourself, you probably need every ounce of cheese you can muster.

Plus if you're wearing Solar Armor just in case you get this badly screwed, then in most combats you'll be weaker than you would have been if you'd been wearing a more generally useful set. There aren't really that many monsters that deal radiant damage, and the Daily power on the armor is a joke. Try out some Dwarven Armor instead. It'll be useful more often, won't ever make you miss an attack, has a nice property, and is two levels lower.

It's an interesting combination but, outside of an extremely odd campaign setup, it hurts the user at least as much as it helps.

I would not allow a paladin to divine challenge himself, rules or no rules. I would also get up from my chair, walk around the table and smack the player upside his head with the heaviest rulebook I could lay my hands on.

Well, then there are of course people who like the Gods of old Forgotten Realms, so it is entirely possible those crazy priests/paladins of Ilmater might show up divinely challenging themselves so others do not have to suffer...

Honestly pg 272 bears great importance to clerics with all their AOE Healing powers. Apparently those Clerics can't heal themselves with those powers unless it explicitly says so.

Gladly, all those powers do explicitly say so (at least the ones I am aware of). :D
