Soldier BAB

Is the soldier advanced class BAB an error? Why isn't it +1/level?

As near as I can tell, the soldier, martial artist, and gunslinger are the fighting men of d20 modern, but only the Martial Artist gets the good BAB progression, and I can't really figure out why.

I think they were really limiting the classes that got +1BAB every level. Out of all the lcasses in the book only 3 have it.

Probably to keep the class balanced. It does get a lot of stuff that otherwise is not available to characters - Weapon Spec., Greater Weapon Spec, Improved Crit, Critical Strike... If you gave them +1 BAB/lvl, they would be too powerful with their chosen weapon (probably a ranged weapon): +1 to hit, +4 damage, double threat range, all threats automatically confirmed...

Because the soldier isn't focussed 100% on fighting, but includes tactical nous too?

To limit the number of possible ways of getting 4 attacks per round at the highest levels?

Only the melee focused classes got the +1/level BAB. My thinking is it too boost the value of melee combat, since ranged combat is more powerful than in D&D.

If you were to introduce a Advanced or Prestige Class, I'll limit the +1/level BAB to classes that focused on melee.

Personally I've been thinking of killing 1 for 1 bab on modern, and giving the classes i take it away from benifits so that they don't suffer. As it stands, even gun people might be tempted to go for a class with melee combat just for the increased attack rate.

Sure, and there's nothing bad about that. There is no minimum STR, and certainly no maximum DEX, prerequisite for those classes, and none was intended. Even a weakling can take a level of strong hero, and I like that.

If you want to have a real high BAB, by all means go for strong hero, even if you have STR 8 and will never use a melee weapon. After all, it means that you'll miss out other stuff: More Skill points, Talents and Bonus feats that will actually use your other ability scores (DEX for example) better, and other stuff.

If you go for strong hero instead of fast hero, you'll miss skill points, a better defense bonus, stuff like uncanny dodge, evasion and defensive roll, and so on. If you go martial artist instead of soldier or gunslinger for your gun user, you'll get class abilities you'll probably never use, and will miss stuff that could really help you, like close combat shot, weapon focus, bull's eye, and so on. a good BAB is not everything there is if you want your character be good at gunning (hitting's only half of it: you want to avoid getting hit, too)
