Solo Monster Design Help

I'm currently writing up an Eberron 4E adventure for my group, and while 90% of the stuff is easy, I'm having trouble capturing the mechanics of the final monster. So I figured I would turn to the forums and solicit some advice from those who have done so and could offer tips.

Some background:

The PC's will be between level 2 and 3 when facing down this encounter. They may be slightly behind on gear and/or money, but noting hugely major. I'd like to make the encounter fairly challenging, so I was thinking level 4 might be appropriate, if not 5.

The PC's will be exploring an ancient facility which houses a machine akin to a Creation Forge, only instead of objects or Warforged, it produces flesh and blood aberrant creatures (think of Hojo's experiments from the Mako Reactor in Nibelheim from FF7, or the Bio Facility from Phantasy Star 4, or even the facilities of the Shapers from the Geneforge series).

The fight itself will be taking place in and around the Bio-Forge (as I've taken to calling it), among the network of catwalks, pipes, and cable supports which suspend the machine over top of a monolithic sized Khyber dragonshard.

What I have so far isn't much; given the layout, I imagine a sort of warped, spiderlike creature that vaguely resembles a Bugbear or Hobgoblin. I was thinking it might work best as a Lurker, but I'm not sure if a Solo Lurker would work very well. It would be either Large or Huge.
