D&D 5E (2014) Some Gems I Have Forgotten In The DMG

I do use the DMG regularly, and not just for magic items.

But it could really be better organized.

It blew my mind years ago when I was working as an editor and we saw several attempts to create rules for quicksand and drowning, both of which are covered in the DMG. The DMG also has rules for Morale checks and weapon speed modifiers, both of which are often marked as something we grognards miss from the TSR days.

It's a great book, folks.

I offer many of these optional rules up to players, such as after spending some money and downtime training, a PC can earn the Cleave skill. Or Flanking, etc.

Azurite and Rhodochrosite. Can't remember the last time I used these in a game.

The scroll mishaps and mixing potions tables (pg 140) are fun, though I can't say we've used them at all.
The Special Features section (pg 141-143) is a good reminder that we can bring a bit more flair to Magic Items in our campaigns.

I often remind people about the Improvised Damage section in Chapter 8 of the DMG. It is useful for various situations like when you want the dragon to slap the ceiling and cause a cave-in while it escapes the PCs.

Tables. The whole lot!

I can come with all kind of villain NPCs, but I'm not sure I'd made a gold dragon who over-enunciate his words resorting to extortion to (re)conquer his tower as campaign villain.

Mark. This is really fun. Requires hitting the target, so it's not like your rogue can just OA every creature on the field and deal full sneak attack damage every turn, or whatever, but it does allow a "tank" to be "sticky", especially combined with other existing defender options. Why don't more people use this? It's even more effective in the hands of a fighter than anyone else at high levels, but also allows Barbarians and Paladins, the other two classic defenders, to really punish enemies to who try to circumvent them, all without giving up other reactions like Protection Fighting style.

I love Marks... I wish this was in the PHB instead of the DMG.

having said that my group not only forgets, but sometiems says "I wish we had a mark action" and it is days later before someone remember "Wait we do"

Some of the things I found in the book which came in handy were:

• Social interaction rules
• Morale rules
• Guns

Funnily enough, this is what people also say when they go to a hotel in Texas and open the Bible on the nightstand.
