Adventurer
I have been playing D&D for quite a while.. started in 3e... then it just snowballed from there. So i'm pretty accomplished in that aspect, but now im trying my hand at my OWN Zelda version. Now I'm going to get something out of the way right now. I know the stigma behind creating zelda as a tabletop, I know it usually doesnt work out so just save your breath now. I actually have 2 versions I am working on. One with d4's and d6's skill based. The one in question is my d20 version.
So here is the basic skeletal system as it sits....
So I have decided to go classless. Classes just don't fit my vision for my game. As such I have 3 ways of gaining abilities. These are my ability trees. I have race ability trees, attribute ability trees (these attributes are based on the 6 sages and their symbols), I also have the 3 virtues (Power, Wisdom, and Courage). Every time you level you gain an ability point. You level by attaining heart containers. HP is basically heart containers x4. Everyone begins with 3 containers so 12 HP and 3 ability points. A beginning character start's off with one race ability, one attribute ability and one virtue ability. Weapons, spells and pretty much any interaction is done by rolling an attribute check vs a virtue (or target number specifies by the DM). There is NO AC. Each weapon will be similarly formatted to 4th edition saying what ability it keys off of , and what virtue it targets. Skills will be held in the same manner, there are NO skill lists just rolling a d20 and applying the attribute mod. It's really aimed to be a rules light system allowing for maximum control over your character and how he/she develops.
So Here is the "fire" tree I have so far, to give you a feel of what I'm attempting to go for here. Each heart symbol is the amount of hearts you must have to take the ability (trying to hearken back to zelda 1 in this respect ... heh)

So there is the basics of the system. Now I need to figure out what I'm going to do about the other attributes, and virtues. I have most of the races thought out. It will be directly after skyward sword so there's a lot of free reign in the timeline to discover temples or build them or whatever and quite a few races. I'm pretty excited about it really.
So back to my big question is that I need a list of somekind of what modifications a game like pathfinder or D&D makes.. like through class levels , magical items etc etc.... so i can identify what I can do with these attribute trees in a like wise manner. If any of that even makes sense. So if anyone can point me somewhere that I can get all of this information in a concise way that would be awesome. I guess Im wanting to figure out the meta game of the OGL games to see the reasoning and mathematics behind making things interact the way they do.
