Yeah. Personally, I favor an approach where Arcana and Religion become a sort of supernatural Perception when trained.

This works. I really like what they did with it in Pathfinder second edition. There, Detect Magic is a cantrip, so you can use it as often as you like for only one action, but it only tells you if there is magic within the aura, not what or where.

May I ask what was destroyed and replaced in your session?

Allowed by some GM's:
arrows/bolts shot at enemies
dagger stuck in a fleeing enemy
5 flasks of oil used to make the floor slick to slow mounted pursuit (we decided not to set it on fire and burn the town)
hand axe destroyed by an ooze
t5 gold lost in a wager
5 sp a person to use the ferry across the water
Rope used to tie up prisoners turned over to the watch

Disallowed by some GM's:
arrows/bolts shot at enemies
flute given as a gift
healing potion given as a gift
javelin stuck in cart spokes to slow/stop it
