some mounted combat questions

First Post
On a charge, can the mount attack? Under the ride skill, it says that it requires a DC 10 ride check to allow your mount to attack and this is a free action. Does this apply to charges also?

If the mount can attack on a charge, what about when using the feat Ride By Attack. Can it still attack on the charge?

My other question deals with evasion. If the mount has improved evasion, how do you handle that while you are riding it? Does it give the rider a bonus? Is it canceled unless the rider makes a ride check?

I would normally spend more time looking for the answers for myself first, but I didn't find anything after looking for 2-3 minutes and I am feeling lazy today. Thanks for any help.

1. Yes the mount can attack. No reason why not.
2. No - only the rider can attack with Ride-by Attack.
3. We call it the "magic pretzel," and there is no bonus to the rider - we don't know how it works, but it works.

Thanks for the quick reply. That helps a lot. It means that I will probably use Ride-by attack very seldom, but I'll still pick it up so I can get spirited charge.

My halfing paladin used ride-by attack all the time.

You do, however, have to agree with your DM to modifcations to charging rules so that it's possible to do ride-by attacks.

1. Do not requrie charging to the closest square. Doing that means ride-by attack can rarely be done.

2. Allow charging through friendly squares. Not allowing that is a really, really dumb rules change from 3.0 and the 3.5 errata.

That's it. Keep the restrictions about rough terrain, etc.
