Some New Warlock Invocations

Falling Icicle

Adventurer
Here's some Warlock invocations I cooked up.

Arcane Blast
Least; 2nd; Eldritch Essence

This eldritch essence invocation allows you to change your eldritch blast into an arcane blast. A spellcaster struck by an arcane blast must make a will save or lose one randomly determined prepared spell or spell slot from his or her highest level of available spells remaining.

Dark Force
Greater; 5th

You can use telekinesis as the spell with this invocation. You may only use the Violent Thrust version once every 1d4 rounds. When using dark force, a faintly visible field of dark energy can be seen emanating from your hand and also around the subject with a DC 10 spot check.

Dark Puppetry
Greater; 6th

You can use animate objects as the spell with this invocation, except that the duration is Concentration. Objects animated with this invocation take on a devious or even malicious appearance. Dolls appear to have glowing red or black eyes and a wicked smile, chairs creek eerily as they move, and silverware appears jagged and menacing. An object's appearance returns to normal when this invocation ends.

The animated objects' attacks are treated as magical weapons for overcoming damage reduction. If you are chaotic alignment, the objects' attacks are also treated as chaotic weapons. If you are evil alignment, the objects' attacks are also treated as evil weapons.

Devil's Cunning
Lesser; 3rd

You become as guileful as a devil. This invocation provides the same benefits as the glibness and undetectable alignment spells. Devil's cunning lasts for 24 hours.

Dominate
Dark; 9th

You can control the mind of a creature within 60 feet. This otherwise functions as the dominate monster spell. You can never have more than one target dominated at a time with this ability. If a second creature is dominated, you lose your hold on the first creature.

Eldritch Burst
Greater; 6th; Blast Shape

This blast shape invocation causes your eldritch blast to explode upon striking its target. You must make a ranged touch attack roll to strike your target, as normal. Note that a Warlock does not have to target a creature with his eldritch blast; he can target an object or surface, if desired. If the attack misses, the blast fizzles with no effect. If it hits, it detonates in a 10 foot radius burst (centered on any corner of the target's space, which you designate when casting it). The primary target takes damage as normal (with no save, since it was struck directly by the blast), while other targets within the burst get a reflex save for half damage (no touch attack roll is required to hit the secondary targets).

Macabre Servant
Greater; 6th

You can create undead creatures as with the spell create undead, save that the casting time is 1 standard action and that undead created are under your control. The normal minimum caster level to create certain types of undead applies. You can't control more than 4 HD worth of undead per caster level at any one time, including those created with other invocations or spells unless they specifically allow you to exceed this limit.

Unless you provide the normal material component for the spell (a black onyx gem worth 50 gp per HD of the undead) as part of the process, undead created by this ability crumble into dust after 1 minute per caster level.

Macabre Servant, Greater
Dark; 8th

You can create powerful undead creatures as with the spell create greater undead, save that the casting time is 1 standard action and that undead created are under your control. The normal minimum caster level to create certain types of undead applies. You can't control more than 4 HD worth of undead per caster level at any one time, including those created with other invocations or spells unless they specifically allow you to exceed this limit.

Unless you provide the normal material component for the spell (a black onyx gem worth 50 gp per HD of the undead) as part of the process, undead created by this ability crumble into dust (or dissipate, if incorporeal) after 1 minute per caster level.

[Edit]Removed the summoning invocations. The original version was perhaps too powerful and easily exploited and felt too clunky. I will attempt to rewrite a better version and post it at a later time.

[Edit]Added a 1d4 round delay to the Violent Thrust version of Dark Force to make it more reasonable as a greater invocation. Thanks to IceFractal for the idea!

Arcane Blast is too narrow to be Greater, but is a bit strong at Least. I'd say either limit it to removing a 3rd level or lower slot, or else make it Lesser.

Dark Force would be ok at Greater if it had a 1d4 round delay between uses of the Thrust function, like the Ghost's ability. Dark seems a bit much for something that you can get with a medium-cost item.

It seems like Eldritch Burst should do something if it misses - perhaps have the explosion, but half-strength and offset 5' in a random direction.

Thanks for the feedback.

The reason I put Arcane Blast at level 2 (least) is because it is patterned after the Arcane Turmoil spell in Complete Mage, which is level 2, dispels as a targeted dispel and takes away a spell. This invocation only takes away a spell; it does not dispel. Also, while it may seem a bit powerful, it is only useful against spellcasters, rather than many different types of opponents. Also remember that the spell is not lost automatically; the target gets a will save to ignore that effect. And every spellcaster that I know of has will as one of their good saves. Being limited to only a few classes and completely useless against all others, I think it is ok being a bit powerful for its grade.

Telekinesis at will does seem a bit strong, but there is a ring that gives it at will also (just as there is a ring that gives invisibility at will). I'm not really sure if it would be worth a dark invocation. I've had psionics in my games that can use telekinesis so often as to be pretty much at will, and never really had a problem with it. Putting a delay on how often you can use the thrust ability could be a good compromise though. I think I'll do that.

I've looked over Arcane Turmoil, and frankly I think its overpowered. Its better than the 3rd level dispel magic. Okay, I can't do the area dispel, big deal, I use the targetted version more often anyway.

That said, with a saving throw I wonder if the power is too weak honestly. As stated, its fairly specific, which is always a problem with an invocation, they should be as general as possible.

"Spooooooon!"

Excellent invocation.
