well if pathfinder was just lumping them together out of convenience they should not have made mega fauna category,
We made the "mega-fauna" category so we could present more prehistoric post-Cretaceous creatures in the game... for the same reason that these are animals and thus can generally only spare a half page rather than a full page. You'll note that the creatures we put under "mega-fauna" are ones that, as a general rule, don't have any real-world surviving descendants whom we can attach them to as a "non-dire" creature (regardless of the fact that I hate the use of "dire" as a kludge to say "tougher than normal and higher CR than typical").
