well if pathfinder was just lumping them together out of convenience they should not have made mega fauna category,

We made the "mega-fauna" category so we could present more prehistoric post-Cretaceous creatures in the game... for the same reason that these are animals and thus can generally only spare a half page rather than a full page. You'll note that the creatures we put under "mega-fauna" are ones that, as a general rule, don't have any real-world surviving descendants whom we can attach them to as a "non-dire" creature (regardless of the fact that I hate the use of "dire" as a kludge to say "tougher than normal and higher CR than typical").

That's gonna be one of our big Gen Con releases. So unlike most books, whose release dates are somewhat prone to fluctuation... I can say pretty confidently that Ultimate Equipment will be coming out on the first day of Gen Con.
