Sonic Monsters: Ideas

I need a sonic-themed monster for a little mini-game I'm Dming. These guys are level 13 and going through a monestary cursed with silence. When they break the silence, I'd like the heretofor entrapped sonic monster to appear and kick their...um..butts. The Destrachan seems a bit weak (even when advanced) and a Banshee's a bit too hard. And if it could somehow make sense that it was trapped in an old monestary, well so much the better.

Any ideas?

I love me some destrachans. I didn't realize how intelligent they were until a thread on here some months back. Instead of giving one (or more) destrachans advanced HD, why not slap a few class levels on instead.

Party Members: "Yaay, we silenced the destrachan and rendered it helpless, now lets call it names and poke it with a stick. Ha ha ha!"

*Destrachan Warlock zaps them with an Eldtrich Blast*

Party Members: "Waaah! Memorizing every page of the Monster Manual wasn't able to save us from painful death! Warn our replacement characters!"

With the right invocations, it could make for a very interesting and capable opponent.

MM III is your friend...how about a Deathshrieker (CR 15) or a Living Greater Shout (CR 15, using the Living Spell template).

The Deathshrieker is a Medium incorporeal undead with a nasty scream attack (possibilites are deafening, stunning and insanity) and a touch attack that deals permanant Cha drain. They cannot abide magical silence, needing a Will save to enter it and even taking damage from it (thus being set free by the PCs). It can be the spirit of someone who died a slow, agonizing death in the monastary.

The Living Greater Shout would be a Huge Ooze with a slam attack that does 1d8 damage + 10d6 sonic damage, target is stunned and deafened (Fort. partial). It can also engulf and grapple the PCs and do the above damage. Not sure what it would be doing in a monastary, but it would not be able to penetrate magical silence, hence was trapped until the PCs set it free.

don't forget Knell Beetles.

I once made a swarm of wasp-like insects that dealth sonic damage from the cacophony of their wings.

try giving deadly Roar abilities to existing monsters like ghosts or dire animals.

The BoneSinger from Ghostwalk is always a fun baddy as well.

The sonic orb spells could be made into nice spell-like abilities

The Rukanyr from Fiend Folio is a good bet as a CR 9 creature. Beef a couple of these babies up and your party will be "screaming". I believe it to be the perfect creature for your situation. How it got there is a question for you though.

Best Regards

Oh, and you totally have to include some Gentlemen, ala Buffy.

Can't call for mom, can't say a word,
You'll die screaming but you won't be heard...
