Sons of Grummish, question: PC lvls

Mighty Veil

First Post
My group is two sessions into Sons of Grummish. We ended tonight's game at the orc scout camp site. My question is what levels were PCs throughout your games of SoG?

PCs started the adventure at 4th level. NPCs at 3rd and 4th (used when a PC can't make it). Looks like everyone will be up a level by the time of the orc fortress. 5th level seems right for this part. I'm assuming 6th level is gained at the end of the adventure. Does this sound right?

That's pretty much right.

Cheers!

I don't really see 4,000 XP worth of adventuring between Melvaunt and Xul Jarak. My party went in as five 4th-level characters. They killed Vhazaar, two sergeants, the ogre, a few berserkers, and a crapload of archers, warriors, and brutes. A character did perish however. The rest of the adventure seems to be a cakewalk.

I handed out 1450 xp each to 4 characters last night. They adventured from "leaving the glister road" till "orc scout camp". There were quite a few random encounters (I gave half xp for random enc.).

I played in a group with 4 4th levels in this module. We got massacred time and again, mainly due to the orcs having barbarain levels and being able to hit our pathetic 4th level ACs almost without trying and doing an average of 16hps damage per hit. We were finished off at the citadel itself by the wyvern, along with a few orcs in the background helping out their "pet".

We conlcuded 4th was little weak for this module. ;)

Having just played this, the rest is ok except the final fight which could go well or very badly. With us it boiled down to one failed save on the bad guys fault - otherwise we were probably in big trouble. A creature that can dish out easily 50 points of damage a round to 5th level characters could have caused us problems.

Generally the main problem about the big fight at the top is the fact that two of our spell casters died and the other was almost totally out of spells having tried unsuccessfully to keep some in reserve. There was no chance to rest and the rest of the adventure was completely with almost no spells - just looted potions
