Sor/Wiz 7 spells

Hands down, Limited Wish is the first spell you should take. Beyond that, I like the force spells - Forcecage and Mage's Sword. Simulacrum is a great choice later on - create yourself an army of yourselves. Say you're all 14th level - how useful would it be to have 2 or 3 7th level copies of yourself or the cleric? Note that in 3.5 you can create a simulacrum of other people. And they're very good as diversions - which one does the enemy target?

7th level has some really nice spells...

Limited Wish is obviously the best one available.
Greater Teleport is an extremely powerful spell and not limited like its 5th-level counterpart.
Greater Scrying can also be rather good under the right circumstances.
Forcecage is great against opponents, that cannot escape from it.
Greater Shadow Conjuration offers some huge flexibility.
Waves of Exhaustion can be very nasty.
Reverse Gravity is fun and can take some opponents (combat brutes) out for quite a while.

People keep suggesting limited wish. While I don't deny that it seems to be somewhat useful, I've always thought that if you were doing your job as a generalist, you shouldn't need limited wish. Why am I wrong?

I'm not quite as big a fan of limited wish as Thanee (I wouldn't say it's "obviously the best one available") but it's quite a good spell. Among other uses, it'll duplicate the divine spells in the spell compendium that bring back a dead ally if you can manage to cast it within one round of the death. I think they were called "Revivification" and "Last Breath" though I'm not certain of the names.

Well, even a generalist cannot cover every possible situation. Limited Wish can, pretty much.

It's a spell you have prepared almost all the time, and only rarely actually cast, but when you do it, you will know why it is so good. ;)

limited number of spells per day. There is just no way to always have just the spell you need prepared for every situation you run into. Either you don't have it memorized or (heaven forbid) you don't even have it in your spell book yet (this happens to me most when I'm creating a new wizard at higher than 1st level--it's just expensive to have much more than the 2 free spells per level in your starting spell book). Heck, you might not even have access to the spell you need (raise dead on the dead cleric that can raise/heal the rest of the party).

Limited wish is your big catch-all spell. Granted, you shouldn't be casting it every single day (or more)...but it is the sonic screw driver of spells---it does what you need it to do when you most need it done.

Even one with scrolls and UMD ranks? Seems like he could do more than even limited wish (albeit with a higher failure rate occasionally; I suppose it's a trade off).

For example, a 13th level generalist with a 12 Cha, max UMD ranks, and synergy bonuses from Spellcraft and Decipher Script (total 13 modifier) has a 35% chance to cast resurrection from a scroll. A 13th level generalist using limited wish has a 0% chance to emulate resurrection.

In that case, why not carry a scroll or two instead of always wasting a slot?
 

Wot, no plane shift?

Also excellent:
- greater teleport + greater scrying (for greater scry + buff + teleport = kill)
- power word blind (very nice against casters)
- control weather (army killer; nice if you lack a Druid)
