Sor/Wiz 7 spells

As a current DM of the AoW... Reverse Gravity is pissing me the hell off. Damn spell is way too good.

Force Cage is the best NPC spell that has ever been made (well maybe Wish) but as a PC spell it is only ‘ok’.

Greater Teleport is a ‘must have’ spell but I don’t know if you have to take it right now. It solves so many issues that at some point you will need it.

Hope that helps

I play a 17th level wizard/eldritch knight.

My suggestions would be Greater Teleport and Magnificent Mansion. I use them all the time.

I used limited wish once, but it was beautiful. Good to have as an option if needed. If you carry around 1 on a scroll for emergencies you are pretty set.

Prismatic spray has been great fun when used against us (fun because we had to mount transplanar rescue expeditions :)), but it seems like a really crappy spell against monsters.

By the time 7th-level spells are available, almost everything has resistances or immunities to something (even if they're just in the form of "I only fail Fort saves on a 1"). Giving the monsters yet another chance to resist, in addition to saves and SR doesn't really strike me as a good idea.

OTOH, I'm drawing heavily on Vance for inspiration for this character, which makes prismatic spray so very fitting...

Prismatic spray is very nice for clearing out a room quickly. It makes a good 'opener' for a big battle where you've got multiple opponents to deal with. Even better if you have the archmage spell shaping arcana, so you can just mold it around your allies. (A hall full of hill giants is the occasion I am remembering.) A 60 ft. cone is a big pieces of real estate during a battle.

It's true that the spell is very much a roll of the dice, but it has at least the chance of doing some damage to just about anything. Four out of the possible seven effects are "save or lose".

It's also flashy and has style, which are not benefits to be dismissed.

Summon monster 7 has some nice motility. The bone devil can lay down a dimensional anchor or wall of ice each round. Huge elementals can be usefull and a celestial elephant can trample foes nicely.

The one round casting is a pain in the bum, though. That is the main reason why I don't usually bother with summoning spells.

My players really like magnificent mansion, because they know they're safe from foes who would like to Scry - Buff - Teleport and kick them in the jimmies.

Simulacrum is a great choice later on - create yourself an army of yourselves. Say you're all 14th level - how useful would it be to have 2 or 3 7th level copies of yourself or the cleric? Note that in 3.5 you can create a simulacrum of other people. And they're very good as diversions - which one does the enemy target?
The one that costs 1000 XP to make?

Simulacrum is way cool, but it's an awfully expensive decoy.

It seems more useful to have it help with item creation or cast as many divinations like clairvoyance or arcane eye as possible and then sit safely in rope trick for the rest of the day.

Wot, no plane shift?
When I need plane shift, I'm not wasting a 7th-level slot, I use a 6th-level one to bind a ghaele.

OK, that's just being arrogant, but seriously, when I need plane shift, the cleric casts it using a 5th-level slot. I'm not taking a spell that someone else has at two levels lower at no cost.

Even one with scrolls and UMD ranks? Seems like he could do more than even limited wish (albeit with a higher failure rate occasionally; I suppose it's a trade off).
Someone with UMD and limited wish could do even more. I love my human paragon levels.

But the two serve a different purpose. Scrolls are for situations you expect. Limited wish is for situations you don't. No-one will have scrolls of everything from every list up to 5th level... and limited wish gets you that.

In that case, why not carry a scroll or two instead of always wasting a slot?
A scroll of limited wish costs 3,775 gp to buy, or 1,137.5 gp and 391 XP to make. If you're making it yourself, you need the spell, so it's still a good choice for a wizard to learn. If you're buying it... even at 13th-14th level, 3,775 gp is a good deal for a get out of jail free card when you really need it, but I'd definitely think twice before using it. Just 300 XP, less so.
