Sorcerer Power Question

Hey all,

So, I got bored, and decided I would try build a character with real flavour. So far, I've come up with a Eladrin Battle-Sorcerer, who wields a spear in his main hand, and a dagger as his impliment in his off-hand. I wouldn't be able to go toe-to-toe with big bulky bosses, but makes for quite a fun striker, especially with the Fey Step racial trait.

When choosing my powers, I decided to go with the following:

> Ensorcelled Blade.
> Energy Strobe.
> Teleporting Strike.
> Grounding Rebuke.

When I stated him up on the character builder, I noticed that the power which require me to be wielding a dagger (Ensorcelled Blade, Teleporting Strike) only give me the option to attack with the dagger.

Surely, I should be able to attack with the spear instead, as I'm wielding the dagger, just not using it. Am I right, and the builder wrong, or have I missed something?

Cheers,
Chris.

I'm pretty sure that power is working as intended, but only Klaus can answer that for real since he wrote it.

That said, your DM may allow it to be used with the spear.

If a power says you must be wielding a (blank) you must attack with (blank). See the official FAQ about Rogues being required to actually attack with a Light Blade.

Here's is an answer from the FAQ that addresses a similar issue, and seems relevant:

"12. Rogue weapon talent requires you to “wield” a particular weapon. What does this mean?

Wielding means you must be using that weapon in the attack. Merely holding it while you attack with another weapon isn’t enough to qualify for any bonuses that result."

The intent with Ensorcelled Blade and similar powers seems to be the same - they are powers intended to be used via a dagger. Simply holding a dagger in your other hand while using a different weapon doesn't work.

Yeah, they're dagger-only. Those powers were created for knife-fighting sorcerers.

If you want better weapon options, look into this feat, Mastery of Knives; it grants proficiency in two superior weapons and allows you to treat them as daggers for the purposes of your spells.

Maybe you can just refluff it?

When said refluffing is designed to circumvent restrictions on powers, while allowing the character advantages inherent in being an aladrin using a spear, I'd be questioning whether it is appropriate to do so.

I'd probably be more inclined to go with a swordmage build for the teleporting warrior. Picking up Eladrin Soldier and a multiclass in monk would allow you to use whatever spear you like as an implement, then the dagger in the off-hand for swordmage warding.

Yet, when you consider just how awful said powers are as written, I'd say anyone willing to spend the feat should get it.

Do they have the Arcane keyword? Yes?

Any arcane power in the hands of a sorcerer is pretty damn snazzy. They're kinda good at it.

Tho... again, I feel if you want to go the melee-magic-user route, swordmage or hexblade is a better choice, the classes are just better designed for that sort of character.
