sorcerer sleeping to regain spells?

First Post
i am going to pick up the sorcerer class next level and i was wondering about the following situation:

our party usually sets up watches at night, allowing other members time to rest. however, we never have the spellcasters who need 8 hours of rest stand watch, in order for them to regain their spells. my character stands watch because he is mainly a fighter.

now, how much sleep would my character need to regain his sorcerer spells if he stood watch? he sleeps for 4 hours than is woken up to stand watch for 1 hour, then goes back to sleep. the PHB says something like, for every interruption during sleep, that adds 1 hour to the total time of sleep. so after sleeping for 4 hours, then waking up to stand watch for 1 hour, does my character now need 5 more hours of sleep to regain spells?

what is considererd an interruption and how long can the interruption be? can a sorcerer sleep say for 5 hours, wake up and do stuff for 4 hours, then go back to sleep for 4 more hours and regain their spells?

my DM has a nasty habit of attacking the party at night, so i was wondering what happens to the ability to gain spells when sleep is interrupted, since i forsee that happening quite a bit. i could probably ask the wizard player in our group what happens when his sleep is interrupted whenever our party is attacked at night, but i would like to hear what others have to say first.

Recovering spells

You do need 8 hours sleep to recover used spell slots.

An interruption can be any length of time; personally, an hour is pushing it, but can still be called an "interruption." However, doing "stuff" for four hours in the middle of your sleep cycle means that you're no longer "interrupting" your sleep, you've stopped even *trying* to sleep.

The solution is simple: change the watch order. If you're on the first watch, then you can rest through the night without difficulty. Or you can go on last watch, and sleep straight through.

A combat in the middle of the night would also be an interruption; unless you did nothing during the combat, you'd be looking at at least another hour of sleep needed to recover spell slots.

And any spells used within the previous 8 hours count against your total when you go to recover spells.

yeesh who sleeps outside where all the monsters are. They put the rope trick spell in the game for a reason. ;) Great outdoors  That's where you get eaten, I love the great extra dimensional spaces.

I prefer Leomund's Secure Shelter, myself; more room for the whole party in there, and quite resistant to intrusion by means that don't either (a) set off the built-in Alarm spell, or (b) involve noisily breaking down walls and the like.

And later, Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion is the absolute funnest way to "camp". It comes with MUCH more opulence, and when in towns or cities, you can rent rooms in cheap-as-crap inns, yet still live in the style of a KING. Only thing it doesn't do is food (which is why you have the Cleric prepare a coule Heroe's Feast spells each day, heh!).

thanks, boothbey.

demon_jr, didn't i warn you against going spellcaster? :D

btw, in my group, arcane spellcaster never take watches.

I prefer those as well but ropetrick is 2nd level, and an extended rope trick is 3rd level and gets you thorugh the night when you are 5th. Secure shelter is 4th level I believe, the ansion one of my all time favorite spells in the game is 7th. So as soon as you can use ropetrick, then upgrade to the shelter, then upgrade to the mansion.

pax, doesn't Mord's mansion come with a banquet? like a 12 course meal for 10 people (or something like that)?

Well, yes, technically *A* banquet. As in singular. As in, only one.

Considering the last time I had a character able to cast that a nearly-fifteenth level wizard ... and his Mansion had a duration of 28 hours (would've become 30 hours if he'd levelled before I retired him) ... ONE meal, even a huge banquet, might not prove sufficient. :)

Besides, Heroes Feast has OTHER benefits, besides just feeding people, too.

Don't mind me much, just nit-picking a bit.

^_^

Mord's Mansion "contains sufficient foodstuffs to serve a nine-course banquet to a dozen people per caster level." (pg 231, phb)

-Dang- that's alot of food. At the minimum caster level (13th) there is enough food to feed 156 people like kings! And it comes with it's own ghostly waitstaff, so you don't even have to do any cooking yourself.

Man that's some nice livin'. And people thing adventurers have it rough.
