Sorcerer.

Your post leads me to believe that your wife will have more fun with the greater magical flexibility from having more spells to choose from, as opposed to the very few invocations you get as a Warlock, especially at low levels.

Sorcerer. Greater flexibility, more choice, abilities aren't locked in to close ranges, and (if she is the creative player you say she is :) ) she may enjoy the options that having a familiar can bring to the character.

How is the Warlock different? They start with only a few invocations, and also can "trade-out" some of them at higher levels.

What I meant is, that they - despite being a lot more complex eventually - still start out low. So you can grow with them. Good for learning the subtleties of D&D magic. :)

But in sum ... I am really just jealous your wife plays D&D with you. Mine is fully supportive of my habit, but won't go there with me!

Then you'll really be jealous of me ;) . I met my wife through gaming because her nephew gamed with us and she wanted to make sure we weren't "weird people".

Sorcerer. My wife's first 3e character was a sorcerer, and she loved it. First character ever was a spontaneous-casting cleric. There's a pattern here...

So I'd say sorcerer, and find a way to get her (treasure/buying/whatever) some wands of blaster spells if she doesn't take them as her spells known. In my new campaign (where she's playing a... sorcerer), there was a 3rd level wand of Magic Missiles dropped. Mmmm magic missile -- gives her something to just peg the enemy when she wants to.

Warlock yo!

A Warlock who can expect being able to pour wealth into Scrolls, Wands, Staves, etc are rather powerful. No need to worry about if you "know" the spell... or even if the spell is Arcane or Divine... or Psionic :P Not to mention that from lvl 12+ with a few Item Creation feats, they can supply themselves with any spell they feel like.

And people think Warlocks are "limited" in options... :P (they are, but only if your DM is stingy with minor magic items :P)
