Sound Files at the Table

I seem to recall discussions on the topic in the past, but are there any good websites or applications for implemeting sounds at the table from my laptop? I've seen the demo for soundforge and not sure that works for me...looking for the basics...animal sounds, screams, armor rattling...that kind of thing...How have other implemeted sound at the table?

RPG Soundmixer was a nice purchase in that it included a pretty extensive and varied collection of sound effects to begin with. If you look at some of the sound effect CD collections that are out there for sale, those can run you some big $$.

Of course, as I mentioned, you can tinker with videogames to find ambient sounds, and sound effects (spells, battles, traps, etc.). If you google the name of the video game and "sound effects" you'll find information out there on how to pull those files out into playable formats.

I am a big fan of RPGSoundmixer however I am very bummed out that it doesn't work in Vista and I can no longer use it because of that. I have contacted the developers and posted on their boards - it just looks like they have given up on the project. Too bad, it is currently the best RPG Sound Mixer out there - you can do anything if you know how.

I have downloaded the other mentioned apps in the links above.

Syrinscape is nice but way to limited in flexibility. Plus there are really strange issues with it like having to re-browse the folder to load new sound content. Plus if I name the files with capital letters, the app won't see the sound file.

Mixere is probably the best fit for me. It allows me to assign keys to 'snapshots' and fade between this mix and that mix. The only issue I have with it atm is that I cannot start all the tracks at once (or selected tracks). I want a master play button and a way to select mulitple tracks. When I hit this master play button, the selected tracks all start at the same time. Currently I have to start each track at a time which is a royal pain if I have a mix of 15 tracks. I even tried to snap shot it but that is impossible to start all the tracks and snapshot it before anything is played. That is the only issue I am having currently and if anyone knows a way around this, please let me know.

I still wish RPGSoundmixer worked in Vista however.. :(

Isn't there something in Vista that will let you run RPGsoundmixer in a shell of a previous version of Windows?

Of course, that would make too much sense and I've noticed some lack of that in MS's upgrading.

Here is a link to one tool that I've been considering purchasing. It's not free, but you can try out a demo. It seems intuitive and worth the $20.

RPG Soundmixer

Job.

This is what i've used for the past 2 years, cost me 20 bucks. I can't say that it is the BEST because i have nothing to compare it to, but it has worked flawlessly without a hitch. I don't run a game without it. It comes with several hundred custom sounds, and you can import as many new ones as you want.

YI've been using music and sound effects in my games since I first started DM'ing some 20 years ago. I think it definitely adds to games, and is a great way to catch the attention of (sometime) attention deficient players ;)

RPG Soundmixer is a pretty decent program and does what you need it to do in an easy to use manner. I was expecting an update some years ago, but the creator has pretty much gone MIA on his own website. I used RPG soundmixer during my last two year long campaign, and I liked using it.

This is one of the main reasons i actively resist the online model of gaming: you can't effectively use sound effects and music soundtracks. For one, it eats up bandwidth, and 2) you can't hear each other talk. Music and sound is such an integral part of gaming for me now that i wouldn't want to play without it. It would be like watching a movie without a soundtrack. In fact, i spend hours (yes, i'm a dork) fitting certain soundtracks to certain scenes, like scoring a film. It really is a secondary hobby to gaming. Part of the reason i like to run pre-fab adventures, it saves me tons of time to work on peripheral stuff.

I've been mucking around with Mixere recently, after stumbling on it the other week. It's good! And free!

Another vote for that.

Syrinscape: Bugs fixed in Current version

Syrinscape is nice but way to limited in flexibility. Plus there are really strange issues with it like having to re-browse the folder to load new sound content. Plus if I name the files with capital letters, the app won't see the sound file.

Hey all,

Thought I should let people know... since I still see people reaching my site via this thread (amazing)... These issues have all been fixed in the current version of Syrinscape. They were pretty annoying bugs... but - I guess - pretty normal for the first release of a program... especially by little amateur programmer me!

If anyone else can find anything weird please let me know!!!

It's gratifying that so many people seem to be using my program!

:D
