eBay has supplied me with a lot of Star Wars prepainted plastic minis recently. Anybody got any other ideas on sources of sci-fi painted minis?

No painting or building. Not in my skill set, time budget, or interest level. I just wanna buy stuff and use it.

Is the Star Wars minis scale 28mm?

Pretty much. They're comparable in scale to the WotC D&D prepainted miniatures. I even use a bunch of the Gamorians as orcs.

Some of the HeroClix range can be used, if they're re-based, but they can be a little large compared to some miniatures.

Mongoose did a range of Semi-Modern prepainted Wargaming figures a few years back, that could be usable as Sci-fi figures, but I can't remember the name of the range, and they were a bit crap as well.

You might try some of the Dust Premium figures, e.g.: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dust-Tactics-Babylon-Premium-Axis-Ndak-Kampgruppe-new-sealed-/272582482571. These are quite expensive.

There are some Confrontation miniatures (Dirz mostly) which might work. (I loved their unpainted line; the pre-paints never had enough quality to interest me. YMMV.)

There are a scant few from em-4: http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/Copy_of_SCI_FI.html. I didn't find the quality/price to be good enough that I every purchased any.

There are figures from Heroscape which might be usable. I haven't tried these, so don't know if the scale works, but the figures are relative cheap and of reasonable quality. See https://boardgamegeek.com/image/254540/heroscape-master-set-swarm-marro and perhaps https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/629474/where-start-sci-fi-heroscape.

Also, in a pinch, painted 40K figures can be gotten from eBay. Both quality and price are hit and miss.

Both StarWars and HeroClix have many miniatures to choose from. You'll have to just look through them to tell if any are usable for your game. I've found the StarWars line to be not very interesting, having lots of StormTroopers, or figures with either Blasters or Light Sabers. HeroClix looks more potentially usable, but there are a large number of them to look through. For example: http://adventurescomicscifi.blogspot.com/2012/06/marvel-heroclix-chaos-war-preview-kang.html

Edit: The MechWarrior Dark Age line was evidently pre-painted. I image these are only available on e-bay. Haven't looked through the listing in detail. There are number available on ebay with the search "Mechwarrior Dark Age". E.g.: http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEJ-Mechwar...113957?hash=item5693381665:g:n-cAAOSwnHZYdqK5

Thx!

A lot of the fantasy figures from the Heroscape game are recycled sculpts from the D&D prepaints line. Not sure how tall the aliens are in relation to human-sized figures.

The various Clix minis are pretty much about a head taller than the DDMs, usually about 35mm-ish... Depending on what level of sci-fi you're looking for, there are at least a handful of guys in something that might pass for some sort of power armor or futuristic uniform, or with guns that might pass for futuristic weapons.
There's a big secondary market for Clix, though, and lots of online dealers, so it's a toss-up whether the figures you want will be dirt cheap or pricey.

Confrontation also put out the AT-43 line before closing its doors. You can find decent prices online. http://www.miniaturemarket.com/table-top-miniatures/at-43.html I imagine there's got to be a distributor for Confrontation in the UK since they were a European company.
