SoW: Rescue at Rivenroar (RECRUITING CLOSED)

It's a generic world, most definitely.

Sounds intriguing. Can't wait to see more. Are you going for the controller or striker spot?

I'm surprised there's only one cleric submission so far. Do you have a background in mind?

Shayuri, you know you don't even have to ask. ;) I'd love to see you play something sneaky.

That's one of the main reasons of doing this--to familiarize everyone with the system. This will be the first 4e game I've DM'd too, so it'll be an adventure for all of us.

I'm a bit concerned about the character, though. No religion, no alignment. What could've happened in his life to make him so apathetic?

Glad to see you're getting back into the game after so many years! Do you have the 4e books yet? I don't think there's an SRD available yet to use otherwise. Your character sounds intriguing.
generic know what I am doing know thank you:)

I've played Red Hand of Doom. Can I encorperate that history into my character?

I'd love to play Quarion Ironspell, Eladrin Fighter. Years ago during the Red Hand scare, Quarion's family retreated to the relative saftey of the walls of Brindol. Quarion, a young elf that had just come of age, signed up for the militia to help defeat the horde as it decended upon the city.

Quarion's tenure in the military was short-lived. He fought in the Battle of Brindol and not only managed to NOT distinguish himself, he managed to get so spooked by the battle that he broke and ran before a gang of Dragonspawn. Seeing other men in his volunteer unit trampled beneath the claws of rampaging reptiles was just too much for Quarion. He hid and waited, and when the battle was over, he felt the deep shame of a coward.

Realizing that soldiering was not for him, but with no village left to go home too, Quarion started studying wizardry under a local mage and has taken to it rather slowly. He still feels his shame deeply and is looking for a chance to redeem himslef by performing some great service for Brindol.

[sblock=stats]I'll go Eladrin Fighter (longsword/shield) with Arcane Initiate. I'll sprinkle arcane spells for mass-marking and focus on defensive defendery powers. More details soon to come.

If we need a Controller instead of a Defender, Quarion (history and all) still works as a Wizard with some martial feats. He'll just have focused more on wizardry than fighting[/sblock]

I have the PHB and have spent some time examining it but I am far from certain about how it should work. But I am willing to learn!

I found the pdf for the adventure but I have ignored it and just looked for background. Like Shaggy I reckon the Red Hand background is very flavourful so I looked that up instead and used it for my backstory as follows.

Peregrine Thistledown Class: ((( Paladin
Alignment: Unaligned Race: Halfling
Deity: Kord Size: Small
Age: 21 Gender: Male
Height: 4' 3" Weight: 95 lbs
Eyes: Brown Hair: Dark brown, cropped short

Peregrine was a small child when the Hobgoblin army of the Red Hand attacked Elsir Vale. His parents, who earned their living as traders along the shores of Lake Restin and in the Black Fens, fled before the ravening hordes who suddenly burst out of the Witchwood heading towards Drellin’s Ferry. The column of refugees, of which they were a part, were attacked by fire-breathing hounds and by heavily armed hobgoblin warriors as they made for the old bridge over the river. All seemed lost, and many did indeed fall in the onslaught, but salvation was at hand. A band of heroes erupted from the forest and held off the enemy long enough for the bridge to be destroyed.

The remnants of the column carried on south and young Peregrine gazed admiringly on those he saw as almost God-like, the heroes who had saved him and his family. One in particular caught his fancy, a young human warrior who bore the symbol of an upright sword upon his shield. He had something about him; a kind of glow which seemed more than mortal, but he still spoke to the child and played with him almost as an equal.

But then disaster struck! Oh Woe! A green dragon attacked and wreaked mayhem on the refugees. Dozens more fell and the end seemed in sight but the valiant heroes stood firm and took the fight to this implacable enemy, aided by the braver of the refugees. After a ferocious fight the enemy was defeated but at what a cost! Peregrine’s father fell, sword in hand, his mother was blinded by the breath of the dragon and even the gallant blonde hero, the subject of Peregrine’s adoration breathed his last.

Although still just a small child Peregrine vowed, there and then, that when he grew up he would stand in the place of these fallen heroes and win his own glory, dedicating his life to remembering their deeds and their deaths. He discovered later that the young hero had been a paladin of Kord and so decided that the least he could do was to become the same. And now, years later, he was setting out on his own path of glory.

I'd be very interested in playing a Dwarf Fighter if there's room (I know a lot of folks have already chimed in).

Brega Grimstone is the child of refugees from the overrun Dwarven stronghold of Kar-Zurak. Raised in a human settlement, his parents did their best to instill dwarven values in him. While he's brave and loyal as any good dwarf, he's also got more than his share of the dwarven desire for vengeance. He claims to seek to rid the countryside of savage humanoids like those that took his ancestral home to prevent others from suffering his family's fate. Mostly, though, he's got a grudge.

That's one of the main reasons of doing this--to familiarize everyone with the system. This will be the first 4e game I've DM'd too, so it'll be an adventure for all of us.

I could explain it to you, bit think Mostin the Metagnostic (of course, with wild variations) In the hardly probable case that you never read Sepulchrave's story hour, I am thinking about a character that is hardly probable: as a matter of fact he is highly active and arrogant, and the center of the universe is him. Not because he things that he is the center of the universe, but because what matters most to him is his personal path of becoming , and although there may be causes that are greater for thousands of people, they are not greater for him. And thus the only difference between a god and a mortal is merely a difference of power and influence. Same goes of the eternal dilemma between good and evil, law and chaos. As for now he is unconcerned with such matters, although he recognizes that at some point he may become more involved. But that would be a result of his own path, and not because someone "converts" him.

Also, he is prone to wild philosophical speculations, as well as magical, of course, and is fully willing to explain them to anyone willing to listen to him. As a matter of fact, even if that anyone is not willing, and thus he is almost always speaking.

The backgrounds are looking intriguing. I've edited the top post with the submitted concepts so everyone can see where we stand as far as filling roles is concerned. Keep in mind I'm only selecting five for this adventure. I'll leave recruiting open for another day or so and see what we get.

I've got no problems with using history from RHoD for your background, but keep in mind that I've never read through that one, so I won't purposely be trying to play off the history. I would like for at least a couple of you to be from out of town, and for your story to include what brings you to this tavern in Brindol (I think I've got the name right). Bonus points for those of you NOT avenging some wrong done in RHoD. ;)

Lanrete of Aratosh Class: Wizard
Alignment: Unaligned Race: Human
Deity: none Size: Medium
Age: 23 Gender: Male
Height: 6' 1" Weight: 140 lbs
Eyes: Blue Hair: Long and blonde

Lanrete was born the song of a bard and at the age of 11 was able to impress the (in)famous wizard master Rorua, a woman in her 40s living near a monastery of contemplatives. He became her apprentice, along with other three boys and girls, and proved to be, if not the most gifted in pure arcane power, the most knowledgeable and skilled in discussing obscure and hard to understand topics. Undoubtedly, his frequent trips to the monastery, and furious discussions with the philosophers and contemplatives there helped him gaining a wide range of knowledge...and a stubborn and complete insufferable personality.

At the age of 16 he already viewed with absolute disdain not only the peasants: he also loathed aristocrats, priests and merchants, and two of the other apprentices. His disdain was based on the fact that they never think: they let other people do the thinking for them, or worse, abide on flawed traditions and religions.

When he was 22, his mistress left the tower, after a talk with Lanrete. He refused to speak about that with the other apprentice, took some books and tools and left all of the rest to them.

Since then, he has been on his personal path. He believes that this path is his own, and is what defines him, and thus the path, and him, is the most important thing in the universe - for him. Thus he gives no importance at all to deities, religions, morality and ethic questions. He abides to law only because it is easier that way, but has few qualms in breaching it when to him it is the reasonable to do so. He has an undying thirst for knowledge, not only arcane, but also philosophycal: he is fluent in 5 languages, history, nature and religions.

Recently, his wandering led him to the city of Brindol: he is looking for venerable Arodan, an old sage, follower of the Grendol doctrine: a doctrine in which even though religion(s) sometimes are cause of great strife, they are the only cause of morality, and thus they should be always a determining factor in the decision process of a governor.

Description: Lanrete is a tall man with long hair and blue eyes. He in not unpleasant to the view, but his words can be pretty unpleasant, if he doesn't make an effort to restrain himself. He wears a violet robe with simple decorations.

[sblock=Background/appearance]
Elias never knew his human father. His Elven mother was a wizard, far too focused in her studies to spend much time

with him. He spent much of his days as a child reading his mother's old tomes of arcane lore .
To his mother's chagrin, he didn't have the interest nor the drive to become an accomplished wizard. He was however

quite fascinated by astrology, planar powers and related lore, and became adept at harnesing magical power from this

rather unusual source.

Upon reaching adulthood, Elias set about to explore the world, and learn more about how to harness planar powers.
