Space: 1999 Coming From Modiphius

Space 1999 RPG.webp

The Space: 1999 Roleplaying Game will allow you to join the crew of Moonbase Alpha! Created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson (Thunderbirds, Joe 90, and so much more) in 1975, the British show told the story of a moonbase after a nuclear explosion throws the moon into deep space. The game is written by Andrew Peregrine (Dune) and Modiphius Entertainment, and is powered by Modiphius' 2d20 system.

You can sign up for more information at the Gerry Anderson website.

I... huh...

You know what? This feels like IP fishing. I don't know how else to refer to it. Get an old media, get a license deal, and produce a small run to see how it does.

Dunno. Maybe I'm cynical?
I'm not sure what the sinister element of this is. Create a product, see if there's demand for it, then produce more if people want it.

That sounds ... fine.

Goodman Games, please do something equally sinister with Ralph Bakshi's Wizards for DCC/MCC.

That’s how people make things. Try it and see if people like it. If they do, make more. It applies to games, cars, ice cream, podcasts, music, chairs, beers….

I’m curious what your problem with this is?

When you look at the success of Dr. Who as an IP through the years, I don't understand why anyone would have doubts of the possible success of something like this. Dr. Who wasn't exactly a pearl back in the day. And Modiphius doesn't disappoint.

My guess is that this is a labor of love for someone at Mophidius. I don't imagine they think this is going to be a top-selling game, just something that want to exist. I can't imagine the rights are expensive, so covering costs should be easier.
That's generally my throught whenever I see a company cut deep into a property that's not really hot at the moment. In 2005, Rockstar games put out a video game of The Warriors based on the movie of the same name released in 1979. A friend of mine referred to it as a cynical money grab and I was like, "For a movie that's more than twenty years old at this point?" It was a pretty good game, and obvious someone at Rockstar really loved the movie.

I haven't seen an episode of Space: 1999 since the Reagan administration, which means I'm not really the target audience for this game. I wish Modiphius well and hope fans of the series enjoy this game.
