Space Shuttle Columbia lost?

I'm pretty heavily involved in online simulated auto racing and have put together a new paint scheme for the next season in remembrance, just thought I'd share some pics.

:( God bless all of the astronauts and their families... :(

So this is how it felt when Challenger exploded, eh? Not a good feeling...

Well, this is a little different, but still not good. I remember Challenger because it was widely publicized as sending a teacher into space....and schools across the country (including mine) were tuned in to the live broadcast. It also was different because we pretty much had fallen into believing that the space shuttle, unlike the apollo program, was foolproof. Sending a shuttle into space was like launching an airplane, it seemed. Events like this remind us how fragile space travel can be.

The NASA news briefing didn't have lots of news, of course. A more technical breifing is scheduled for about 3PM, EST.

:(

I found the following text on some of the messages lists that I am on that is in regards to this event.

Seven lives, on the moment of return to Earth....
Change of destination, people...but we're still going home...
Columbia.

Edit: The coloring was my idea...

Greetings!

I remember the feeling I got when the U.S.S. Challenger exploded right there on the launchpad. This just seems eerie, too. Such a terrible, terrible tragedy. We have lost some more excellent men to our quest for knowledge. I mourn for the fine men, and pray for their families left behind.

This very unfortunate event continues a history with a definable and eerie trend to it.

On January 27th 1967 an Apollo capsule burned up killing all 3 on board.

19 years later on January 28th 1986 the shuttle Challenger explodes during liftoff killing all 7 on board.

Another 17 years later on February 1st 2003 shuttle Columbia breaks up on re-entry killing all 7 on board.

I do feel for the families but the thing that drives me nuts it the giant media circus that will surround this. I'm sure many posthumous awards will be given and such but WHY is this such a big deal? I didn't see any posts here about the train wreck in Australia last week where innocent people were killed or the explosion at the pharmaceutical company, there are no posts about the dozens of missing prostitutes from Vancouver and the list goes on.

In these cases you have innocent people who are killed by a tragic accident who were just trying to go about their lives and survive, where in the case of the shuttle crash, you have 7 people who knew the risks of their job and still chose to go. Yes I know that we expect this type of coverage from the media but it still drives me nuts when peoples hearts only bleed when the media tells us or "something big and cool blew up real good".
Just think about it.
