Spearmen?

NightCrawler

First Post
On a campaign i run my PCs are heading to a desert where a tride lives isolated.
I am thinking of the tribe ppl as spearmen and ppl who use nets and such weapons but i ve never made something like that (using these weapons).

Can you point me some basic classes/feats and why not combos?

It wouldnt be a bad idea if they were mounted on camels or horses.

Well, most of the Mounted combat feats are in the PHB and Comp War. Paladins have a bit of an edge in the mounted combat since they have a special mount built into their class.

As for using a spear, you have to ask yourself if they are using halfspears or the longer versions that are reach weapons. If its the latter, you need feats like Hold the Line, Stand Still, Weapon Focus, Combat Reflexes and, if you like Psionics, the Psionic Weapon feat tree. If you have the PHB 2 and/or DCv1, there are lots of additional polearm feats you might like.

( You might also want to check out this current thread because of its discussion of reach:

Coupled with nets, tridents are pretty traditional, so use the TWF feats- mostly in the PHB and Comp War and Comp Adv. Be warned that TWF is a feat intensive and "sub-optimal" build, but fun nonetheless. Also, the net is exotic, so that will burn a feat as well. I'd go with Rangers for this.

Any warrior type can be used, but Fighters have the edge in any feat intensive build. PsyWars follow closely behind since they have lots of feats and psionic powers besides, but I don't think they'd fit the flavor you're describing.

Rangers with Natural Bond (increases their animal companions abilities) can be pretty good mounted combatants as well, especially combined with Mounted Archery.

Ι am thinking of going with the standart spears (reach weapons) so i will check out old the line, stand still and the rest you are saying.

Nets with TWF? That sounds wierd but interesting at the same time.. Can you be more specific on how to play this one?

And the idea with the mounted rangers with mounted archery is great!

Historically, nets were often used as an offhand weapons, with the main hand being used for a one-handed thrusting weapon, like a shortsword, trident or spear. The net was used to entangle/trip, and success was followed with a flurry of quick and viscious thrusts.

Of course, you could also go with using the net purely as a ranged weapon, using that feat tree, and partner it with whatever weapon you prefer (for accuracy, I'd still stick to using a thrusting or bludgeoning weapon- slashing weapons tended to get tangled in nets, or cut them open).
