Special Conversion Thread: Unicorns

Back on the unisus for a sec.

I finally found the dive attack in the SRD (under movement modes in monster special abilities), and dives only allow talon or claw attacks. Let's just add an ability

Impaling Dive (Ex): A unisus may make dive attacks using its horn; successful attacks do 2d8+16 hp of damage.

Sounds good. We also apparently forgot tactics. Updated.

Zebracorns are looking solid so far, though I think the original description sounds a little more CN than N. Anyone else agree with that?

Yeah, they really do.

One website lists "zeal" as a possible group name for zebras. How's that sound?

Perfect!

Yes to the plains hide bonus. Probably +4.

I like CN for them and don't mind either way for the Hide bonus.

Zeal is OK, it fits the grace/malice etc theme we've got going.

It's better than "a stripe of zebracorns"! ;)

Apart from removing the second "and" from "Zebracorns occasionally allow themselves to be tamed and ridden by and friendly, nonevil beings" they look good to go.

EDIT: Oh, just noticed an inconsistency. The intro text has "they can detect evil by touch and will immediately attack evil beings" while the SLA give them regular detect evil. I'd rather change the former, perhaps:

"A zebracorn can be ridden by any being who proves itself friendly, though they can detect evil at will and will immediately attack evil beings.

While looking for one more hybrid creature to complete our batch of 10, I found this...

Monoceros
CLIMATE/TERRAIN: Temperate meadows
FREQUENCY Very rare
ORGANIZATION: Family
ACTIVITY CYCLE: Day
DIET: Herbivore
INTELLIGENCE: Low (5-7)
TREASURE: Nil
ALIGNMENT: Neutral
NO. APPEARING: 1-3
ARMOR CLASS: 4
MOVEMENT: 20
HIT DICE: 6
THAC0: 15
NO. OF ATTACKS: 3
DAMAGE PER ATTACK: 1d8/1d8/1d10
SPECIAL ATTACKS: Nil
SPECIAL DEFENSES: Nil
MAGIC RESISTANCE: Nil
SIZE: L
MORALE: Fearless (20)
XP VALUE: 270

This is a relative of the unicorn, but it is not a good magical creature. The monoceros has a horselike body, the feet of an elephant, the tail of a stag, and a 4’ horn in the middle of its head. It has a horrible howl that frightens horses and oxen, but it is an herbivore. The horn, straight and spiraled, is needle sharp. The monoceros refuses to be captured alive; if it is somehow taken, it kills all who approach it and refuses to eat, eventually dying of starvation.
