Speed

My current house rules on Speed are:

L: 30 20
M: 25 17.5
H: 20 15

I implemented this to give medium armor a better deal. Every character in our games either wore light or heavy and never in between, mostly due to medium armor having the same speed as heavy armor.

Note: 17.5 means that they have a Speed of 4 spaces (20 feet) for half moves, but 7 spaces (35 feet) for full moves and 14 spaces (70 feet) for a run maneuver.

However, I was considering whether to increase the move by 5 and change the table to:

L: 35 25
M: 30 20
H: 25 15

in order to simplify things a little. So basically, I would probably also increase the Speed of all small and medium creatures by 5, all large creatures by 10, etc. (I also happen to think that most extremely large creatures such as giants are moving way too slow as is).

Thoughts on this?

Suggestions?

Hey KD...I like it. Gives a reason for medium armor like you said. I think for my current group I would go with the easier increments of 5, but for an advanced group would use the decimal set.

I'm thinking of just giving medium armours the same speed as light armours - considering that there is minimal increase in armour bonus, while a huge increase in armour check penalty... Keeping the move rate at 30 for men etc. is the least I could do to encourage their use!

Cheers

Plane Sailing: Wow -- that's a very, very interesting idea. The Medium Armors DO really suck . . I mean, what the hell is the point of wearing anything but a chain shirt, unless you've got something that's mithril?

A Breastplate giving an extra +1 protection, but having a big AC penalty . . . and lower max dex . . . well, you know, that's just a really, really good call.

I'd also increase some of the heavier armors by +1 protection, but maybe that's just me.

KarinsDad -- in the MM errata it's made clear that giants and even ogres have a base movement speed of 40', just so you know. (They're weighed down by their armor, so they usually end up with a speed of 30'.)
