D&D 5E Spell & Crossbones

The hackles on the boy's forearms rose. Kid took two more steps backward, then turned and fled. The sound of Gangly and Brutus roaring in mocking laughter stung. Kid made mental note to rat out the pair to Barrington. So many things to tell Jim! When Kid was clear of the alley and made his way back into the busy byway, he spied Etienne walking toward him and slowed down. Huffing for breath, the boy exclaimed, "Let's get back to the Colonial! Got distracted by a ferrum. There's two bullies down that alley, there," Kid pointed at the alley containing Gangly and Brutus, "an' they're scary like. C'mon, 'Tien." Kid mangled both the ferret's and Etienne's name.

OOC: Not sure if you're angling for a kidnapping here, Quickleaf. If you are, I'll edit as need be.

Etienne puts back his hat, and concentrates on a friends spell and enters the alley ; when Kid turns his head and gets behind him he starts to act as a bear, growling and menacing as he remembers wolves are afraid of bears and he can take the part of one...with a real accuracy.

OOC: Let's say my hat is the focus for this spell... I don't want Kid to turns hostile after the spell expiration, so he should not see it. Otherwise, we'll roleplay it. The spell grants me advantage on charisma checks: Intimidate roll 19 or 9 + 4 = 23. I hope the wolves will think twice and don't follow us...

The derisive laughter from the two pirates is cut short by Etienne's surprisingly convincing mimicry of a bear's growl. Even though it's daylight, the deep shadows of the alley and Etienne's sturdy frame give him the countenance of some savage half-man half-beast. Whispers of "did you hear that?" and "what in the hells could that be?" come from Brutus and Gangly as they quickly beat tail down the alley and out of sight.

Étienne ends the spell and runs after Kid. He needs to confim what he smelled... Wolfmen in Nassau ? Maybe Kid may repeat him what they said...

Kid heard the bear growling from the alley. Then he heard all laughter cease, and feet beating a hasty retreat. Then Etienne came running out of the alley. That was all Kid needed to know; he took off like a shot, running full bore for the Colonial, Etienne in tow but no breath for words.

When they arrive at the hotel, Etienne offers Kid a coffee and asked him:

"Is it the first time you saw both sailors ? They have a... feral look that remind me of my native forests. Are they after the same treasure we are actually chasing or is it related to your own business?"

Kid sat down in a white-upholstered rattan chair in the lobby of the Colonial, not caring a whit about the ill looks he received from a nearby clerk. He accepted a coffee from Etienne, but set it down on a table at his elbow. The boy wiped sweat and grime from his temples; running was an exertion that made stark the lad's desperate need for a bath. Kid wiped his hands on the upholstery.

When his breath returned, the boy looked peaky. His cheeks were chalky white. The odor of day-old rum, vomit, and body odor wafted across the settee and filled Etienne's nostrils. "What? No. Ain't seen 'em afore, don't think. They said they gots work and said a ship's name," Kid shuddered before continuing, "that don't bear mentionin' 'ere. Best guess's they's treasure seekers, but lookin' fer diff'rent loot than us." Kid stood up. He drank his coffee and chicory in one go, grimacing at the bitter taste. "Let's go find us the others. Bound ter be 'round 'ere somewheres" Kid made his way back to du Tourbillion's rooms.

Nia purses her lips. She'd had a thought in mind for him as well...but the white skin might be a better idea at that.

"I'd ask you not to kill him until we have de Coral Curse," she said to du Tourbillion. "D'avard may be...of use in lifting its curse, if dis skin de trader obtained is not enough by itself."

"D'accord," agrees du Tourbillon. His stormy eyes study Nia for a moment, a strange improbable kinship there in what both pairs of eyes have seen. The darkest depths of the ocean. "I should get back to my maps and preparations with my man Badouin, if that concludes our business here? And I imagine you have quite the challenge ahead of you with The Coral Curse." His tone is polite but perfunctory.

"Si, it is time for us to depart." Katerina headed to the door but before exiting she paused. "If I bring this wolf here, will you have means to contain him? Or will you need men to help you?"

Smiling weakly, du Tourbillon sets the cordial aside, propping himself up in the chair with his cane. "I assure you I am far less feeble than I appear. And in the event he proves too strong resistance, my man Badouin can hire some scoundrels to restrain him. Good luck, del Corazon."
