"No, no," Kat laughed, "Not feeble at all Senor. But the scoundrel took some time to reign in so I wanted to be certain. Good luck to you too, and I am sure we'll see you soon." With a nod she exited the room.

She returned to the courtyard looking for Kid and the merchant, finding them in the lobby of the hotel. "Our business here is terminado. Let us speak in a more private area." She waited for all to gather before leading them out of town.

Kid nodded, eager to be away. He shoved a hand in his breeches pocket and clutched at the pearl earring.

Barrington leaves after Katerina depart. He nods at du Tourbillon, his lips tight. He does not speak what he is thinking, but instead silly says "Excuse me, sir. Thank you for your time. Enjoy your tea." He does not make eye contact with the Frenchwoman at the table as he leaves, though he does absent-mindedly touch his watch in his waistcoat, to ensure it is still there.

He leaves, following the Captain, and rejoins the others. She seems so distrustful of her officers, he thinks, with regret. If only she would speak openly what she feels. It is not clear to Barrington if he has been invited to the more private area, but he follows unless he is told otherwise.

Katerina led them outside of town, but not too far. They trudged through the hot sand to a little area near the beach surrounded by shady trees. Bella immediately jumped off Kat's shoulder and zoomed up one of the palm trees.

She addressed the group. "We have a lot to do, and little time to get it all done. Nia may be the only one here fully aware of what has happened the past day and what else must be accomplished. I would like to hear everyone's thoughts as how we should proceed. We must bring the Wolf to du Tourbillon, which may not be so easy if he is awake. We must pay for the cannons. We must secure the ship. We must hire a crew, though we have recruited some we still have some specific roles to fill. We may have to separate to get this all completed."

She reached inside her jacket and pulled out a small flask. The liquid inside felt like fire on her parched lips but soothed her tired soul. "First, Étienne is it? What exactly do you think you will do on our ship? I care not if you spend your spare time writing but we need useful bodies on our journey." Katerina's teal eyes sized him up critically. "Have you sailed before? On a ship of this type?"

She turned to Barrington next. "I'd like to know what business you have with Captain Reed. Seeing as he's apparently our competition I think it's a fair question."

"I served in the French Navy during Queen Anne's War on frigates, brigs, barques and sloops. As a marine sergeant, then replacement lieutenant. On other civil ships, I was first mate and barber-surgeon. I also worked as a scout, a spy and a truchement (interpret) for the navy. As a civilian, I mastered canoe and joined a trade company. I know seamanship and cannot loose my balance on a deck.

As per the ship, I guess you refer to the cursed one ? My skin will then help.

And is the Wolf a real animal ? I'm quite good at restraining people, less real feral ones. Hum... It reminds me of something. Minutes ago I met 2 men than reminded me of wolves. Are you referring to a wolfman ?"

She turned to Barrington next. "I'd like to know what business you have with Captain Reed. Seeing as he's apparently our competition I think it's a fair question."

Barrington looks at Katerina and smiles. There might be a sadness in his eyes, or else he is squinting against he declining sun. "Do you mean Captain Wallace?" he asks. "As I told you I have only met the man once. This morning, in fact, after I had finished assisting you in your fight with the one who is now your captive. I also told you, not an hour ago, that Captain Wallace was our competition. You knew this, I presume, but you at least affected to be surprised at learning the news. When I asked you about him, even though you knew he poses a threat to this crew, you declined to answer, claiming your stories were personal."

Barrington removes his hat and begins to fan himself with it.

"Permission to speak freely, Captain?" he asks. He pauses to give her a chance to nod approval. "That was distrustful. We all have personal reasons for being here. I have told you mine. You continue to exhibit suspicion and mistrust, and to grit your teeth at news you already know. Either you trust your officers and will let us do our jobs properly, or you do not. Either you assign us clear duties, including our titles and the shares you mean to offer, which will be set in a binding constitution, or you continue to play games with those you should be least suspicious of, squandering the energies of us all. You have us now, but we will not be able to be an efficient crew for you until you begin to assume that we all are working for a shared success."

He checks the time. "So tell me, Captain, and tell me true, for I only will ask this once. Am I your enemy or am I your friend?"

Kid, who had been watching Bella's antics up the palm tree, felt all the blood drain from his head into his stomach, which began to churn. His heart sank. Fear welled up in his eyes. The boy tugged on Katerina's sleeve, "Kat? Kat? Kat? Kat? Whaddya mean, 'Wolf.' Please tell me true, dat ain't tha Seawolf. Please, Kat? Ain't tha Seawolf, right? Right?" He stood and waited for an answer from his mistress.

"She means D'avard...a crewman of the Seawolf," Nia replies sternly. "We have him captive. Doh we should return to de odders quickly. He is cunning and strong...the less time we leave dem alone wit' him, de better."

Etienne grins: "I can physically handle a bear, so a wolf on 2 or 4 is no issue to me.
D'avard first, then the ship!"
