Right. And if you’re using one of your 2 level 4 spell slots on Spellfire Flare are you really using the other on Hex (that does not upcast)? And no, you can’t have Hex through Fae Touched and use the one free casting because you’re only feat was on Spellfire Adept.

You xan also get hex via a race or origin feat.

I might still take a paladin, bard or sorcerer level if DM hosed me.

I've seen people upcast hex to 3rd level and it will last long enough to refresh on short rest.

Unless the DMs using time limits constantly its under PCs control when they short rest.

So unless the DMs s complete asshat your hypothetical is exactly that. If the DMs a complete asshat probably just leave the game.

A DM would have to.
1. Functionally make short rests impossible (with time limits all the time)
2. Interupt said short rests.

To stop you refreshing. Tbh I woukd probably take musician feat. Gives rest of party incentive to short rest.
