Spell Mastery - My Version

First Post
Here is the version I came up with early this morning. I am curious if anyone has changed spell mastery, or done something similar to what I have done, and what the results were (mine has yet to be playtested).

Spell Mastery [Special]
Prerequisite: Wizard level 1st.
Benefit: Each time you take this feat, choose a number of spells equal to your Intelligence modifier that you already know. You may spontaneously cast any of these spells by sacrificing a prepared spell of equal or
greater level.
Normal: Without this feat, you must use a spellbook to prepare all your spells, except read magic.

I've changed Spell Mastery to grant +1 caster level on all mastered spells. I think that makes it more worthwhile.

For the measure of power you are granting with this change, compare it with Signature Spell from FRCS/PGtF. It allows the wizard to pick one spell he has mastered with Spell Mastery, and then spontaneously convert other spells into it.

I have found the original version of the feat to be very good as is. To prove it I think you need to have your spellcaster stripped of his books once or twice. However I would consider the +1 CL to make it a more worthwhile feat ALL of the time, and it kind of makes sense. It is sort of like a more focused specialization. I wouldn't allow it to stack with any school specialization benefits though.

I also allow wizards to accumulate "bonus feats" one every three levels instead of one every five. These bonus feats must be used to enhance the spellcasters class abilities only. No combat or skill feats, unless it is to skills directly related to casting spells.

I allow sorcerors to get bonus feats once every five levels with the same requirements.

The original feat is very circumstantial. Sure, once the wizard is stripped of his spellbook, he is going to be very glad he has taken Spell Mastery. But how often does that occur? Feats should come to play at least once per one or two sessions, IMO, and having the wizard lose his spellbook that often is only going to result in a frustrated player.

That is why I am thinking about adapting your house rule. However with my giving even more bonus feats than the rules allow I have to consider just making them use another feat to get that bonus as well. IE develop a spell mastery feat chain for spellcasters.

Change mine to Improved Spell Mastery or something, Add Wizard level 3 and Spell Mastery with the selected spell to the prereqs, and that should work. ?

Remember if it works for you it is good enough for your game. I do a fair number of things in my games that others would call broken, monty haul, powergaming, munchkin, or whatever. If you like it, do it. You can always change it.
