Can it be cast on an object worn by a creature if they are unaware of what is happening, or do their personally equiped items qualify as part of the 'creature'?

Some spells allow, some don't. See if it allows it to be cast on an attended object. An attended object is anything someone is holding/wearing/etc. Attended objects have better saving throws, see the PHB for more info.

The spell I'm thinking of is 'Darkness'. It doesn't say one way or another about attended objects.

I wanted to have a Sor. cast Darkness on his Bat familiar's collar then use the Bat to deliver a 'Darkness' spell onto my opponent's equipment.

Thanks,

By the way since I am the DM, I intend to use this manouver to 'Darkness' the whole party and then sit back and send in the Bat with 'Shocking Grasp' and 'Chill Touch' :D
