Spell Turning and SR/Dispel Magic

Infiniti2000

First Post
I searched via Google and site:enworld.org, but didn't find anything useful.

The wizard IMC has Spell Turning.

1. If my bad guy targets him with a dispel magic, which turns on my bad guy, do I roll the caster level checks or are they automatic?

2. If my bad guy targets him with a spell that allows SR and it gets turned, does my bad guy have to roll vs. his own SR or is it automatic?

3. The wizard also has SR (robe of the archmagi) and a ring of counterspells with disintegrate. What's the order of operations in the following: SR, Spell Turning, Ring of Counterspells? My bad guy might in fact target him with a disintegrate this Saturday.

Thanks in advance and I appreciate any discussion on it. :)

1. You may elect to succeed automatically on a dispel check against your own spells, but only when you are casting an area-effect dispel. Since the casting was targeted, you automatically succeed against any spell you cast yourself.

2. SR is always up, unless you elect to lower it. [EDIT: However, "A creature’s spell resistance never interferes with its own spells, items, or abilities." So, no, your own spells go through your own SR.]

3. I would rule: Ring of Counterspells, Spell Turning, SR

The ring acts as soon as someone starts casting on you, if it can, and so goes concurrently with the opposing caster. If it fails, then the spell is inbound. Spell Turning is your next line of defense. If it works, the spell never even makes it to you. If it doesn't, then you check SR.

Note, however, that Disintegrate is an Effect spell, like all Rays. Accordingly, it isn't a targeted spell, and is therefore not subject to spell turning.

Here's what I'd say:

1) I'd make the rolls. Just because you can automatically dispel your own spells, shouldn't mean, that you have to do so in this situation.

2) Yes, I'd allow SR to be used as normal.

3) The ring should be first. SR should be last. Not that you can turn a Disintegrate spell, so it's just a matter between SR and the ring, anyways.

Bye

Thanks for the heads up on the target/effect on disintegrate. Good thing I know this before the weekend. I have a feeling this will be a very complicated fight ruleswise. 16th level cleric (roughly speaking) and a 8th level CR 15 cleric vs. 6 PCs and 1 NPC of 14th to 16th level. I put the odds on the clerics. ;)
