spellbooks and scrolls, a question of cost:

Negative Zero

First Post
i remember seeing somewhere that a wizard may, at the DMs option, use his alchemy skill to manufacture his own inks, thereby reducing the cost of scribing spells into a spellbook, or scrolls. but for the life of me, i can't seem to find the source again. can anyone help?

I've heard house rules of the sort mentioned, but nothing core.

I've read a great many of these threads about the cost of scribing into spellbooks, as my main PC is a wizard and he ended up taking item creation feats in part to pay for getting spells into his book. I handle it differently when I'm DM, but until then, Aster's known for his money-hungryness. Of course, those two levels of rogue might have something to do with it...

Well, the stuff costs 200gp. So, crafting it requires 100gp of materials. Assuming +30 alchemy skill (11 ranks, + 5 Int bonus, +2 skill focus, +2 Alchemy lab, +10 magical item bonus), andsa DC of 20, average roll of a 10, 40 total. 40x20 =800. Will take 3 weeks to create on page worth. And that is for someone really devoted to alchemy. How many 8th level characters really have +40 to a skill?

perhaps i should clarify:

i play in a home brew world, where copper is the standard. the DM has very specific rules on the types and costs of paper and inks suitable for scribing purposes. so the standard PHB/DMG values don't really apply here. i appreciate your insight, Cothian, but that argument doens't really apply to my character.

he's in a position where he very well could just borrow the money from an NPC ally, but he's not the type to do so lightly. therefore, i need options to reduce the cost of scribing spells and scrolls. if anyone has other suggestions, i'd appreciate those as well.

thanks,

The Ink is not a magic item so woouldn't it be 1/3 cost for materials? [66.67 GP].

As for the time, you are after all a wizard, why not Fabricate?
