Spellcraft and Command activated magic items?

Can you use spellcraft to identify a spell cast from a command activated magic item, that otherwise has no visual component? I could see using it to identify a fireball but...

For example, a magic item that let you use charm person.

From the SRD:
ID a spell after suceeding at a save or one that is in place

If the item was used on the person making the skillcheck, they could ID it depending on the check result etc.

Using Detect Magic as the item is used will allow the school to be ID'ed, and possibly the spell.

But you couldn't ID said item just with a spellcaft check.

Rules-wise, technically, that's not a "spell", it's a "spell-like effect" and therefore not applicable under that skill use.

Rationale-wise, it seems like the intent is to ID the magic words and gestures being uttered, which aren't there for a command-word item simulating such an effect.

So I don't allow it, YMMV.
