D&D 5E Spells KNOWN at 3rd/4th Level

Had a bunch of adds and drops of players in the Adventurer League I'm in (as a PC, not a GM) so just before being "locked in" to my character at level 4, I'm switching my monk to a Wiz for more arcane support. The PHB seems to talk about number of spells known at 1st level (6) but since you can theoretically know somewhere between 6 and infinite spells as a Wiz, if you are rolling a character at 3 or 4, how do you determine the number of spells known?

To be clear, I get spell slots and number of prepared spells, but unless I'm missing it (and I very well may be), what's the best way to determine the number known?

TIA!

Pretty sure that officially you only get the 2 new spells per level, so at fourth you would know 12 spells. If you DM is kind, they may give additional ones, probably based on the wealth per level chart in the dmg.

Each time you gain a level, you learn 2 new spells of any level you can cast. So:

1st-level wizard: 6 1st-level
2nd-level wizard: 8 1st-level
3rd-level wizard: 8 1st-level, 2 2nd-level
4th-level wizard: 8 1st-level, 4 2nd-level

You can get additional spells by capturing the spellbooks of enemy wizards.

Since this is AL play, the DM can't be "kind".

Two spells per level it is.

1st-level wizard: 6 1st-level
2nd-level wizard: 8 1st-level
3rd-level wizard: 8 1st-level, 2 2nd-level
4th-level wizard: 8 1st-level, 4 2nd-level

Does the AL allow you to swap out one spell at each level? If so, then theoretically at 4th level couldn't you have 6 1st-level and 6 2nd-level spells by swapping out a 1st for a 2nd at both 3rd & 4th character level? No idea if that's allowed, but it's what I immediately thought of when I saw your handy chart. Thanks!

Nope. The only classes that get to swap out spells on level-up are the ones that don't use spell preparation. As a wizard, once you write a spell in your spellbook, it's there forever.

But you can always learn new spells by copying off scrolls or captured spellbooks.

Oh, of course! Duh. Shoulda remembered that...

While unlikely, those 2nd level spells could be 1st level instead. If you wanted, your 4th level Wiz could have 12 1st level and 0 2nd level spells in the book.

As for rebuilding.... you have until you play your first game at *5th* level before you are locked in. You are not locked in at level 4.

I figured this was sort of implied, but yes: You can always choose to learn a lower-level spell instead.
