Spells - UA's : Incantations

First Post
I posted this in the Rules section originally, but it's probably closer to House-Rule status...

I was looking through Unearthed Arcana and found the section on Incantations.
(For those that haven't seen it) Basically they produce effects similar to spells but require massive amounts of time and components in comparison, and can be "cast" by anyone with the required SKILL (not necessarily the spellcasters of the group, but more than likely they will have the best chance at it).

I like the feel of the concept. Spells becomes rituals that take a long time to prepare, require room to set-up the candles and sigils... require multiple characters to join hands... yadda, yadda, yadda...

Has anybody used them?

Are there more out there someplace?

Is there another book that has a similar mechanic?

I'd like my group to find some ancient mystic writings that aren't scrolls, aren't more spellbooks, and yet still have a magical feel to them...

i got one as treasure once and there was a city-state he used them alot in the campiagn
UA's is the only place other then urban arcana D20 Modern that has anything on them that i know of we made up some for the campiagn though

I'd love to see a system that takes all the "hidden class feature" spells (awaken, remove curse, break enchantment, raise dead,, etc.) and makes them into Incantations.

That would make spontaneous and otherwise customized Clerics & Druids much easier to handle.

You know, I never really thought about it before, but that is exactly what those spells are - class features / specials. Hmm, I'll have to think more on that one. This requires some contemplative thought.

True. Very true. So too, I think, would be altering their spell lists - returning clerics to spheres (and an thereafter very small list of spells common to all clerics).

I really like this idea. I'll probably try this on my players. Eventually even resurrection is trivial and I'm not looking forward to that loss of drama but I don't want to make it impossible either.

Thanks!

I'm actually considering conforming a lot of spells to this system in order to capture the flavor of magic that I want: raise dead, planar binding, heal, etc...

It think it's similar to D20 CoC.

D20 Modern's Urban Arcana handles incantations in much the same format, only better. Give it a read; I think it's exactly what you're looking for.
