Spiked Orc Double Chain?

Do wacky weapons get used in your campaign?

  • Oh yeah, double spiked orc hammers for all!

  • The NPC's use them, but the players rebuke such nonsense.

  • The PC's use them, since double hook swords can score uber kills.

  • Poo on all that wacky stuff.

After reading the thread title, all I can imagine are two pierced orcs, connected by a chain...and probably running in fear from a giant looking for a weapon.

An npc used a spiked chain once, otherwise nothing.

Friday night we were torn to bits by a super-munchkin, 10th level vampire barbarian wielding a spiked chain, with combat reflexes and a 20 Dexterity. In a room with a 15-ft. high ceiling, we were all within his reach. The worst beating came when the party's barbarian made a DC 28 jump check to reach the guy with a flying charge. She took two attacks of opportunity on the way in, then one more as she fell back to the ground. And one of those attacks of opportunity was with a claw that scored a critical hit and inflicted 4 negative levels.

The most cheap, silly thing to happen in a game I ran was the dual-wielding whip master, who, with the aid of some broken as hell feats, was making attacks of opportunity at everything within 15 ft., tripping anything that moved. Honestly, I swear, at one point I had a wizard just cast while lying on the ground, since he would've been tripped if he'd tried to stand up.
Oh man...so the vampire whipped the chain around her in mid-air (ouch!), yanked her into claw range for some nasty work (double ouch!), and then unwound the chain and sent her spinning to the ground (triple ouch!). At least, that's the visual I got of what the guy did.

And the dual-wielding whip guy reminds me of that one guy in the bar battle from The Rundown. Man, that was an awesome fight.

I bet that Vampire had the Hold the Line feat ... since the barbarian charged, two whacks.

Yup, and that accounts for the extra one on the way in, but what about the one on the way out?

Hmm... or are you suggesting two AoOs from Hold the Line, one for entering each square? I'll have to check the wording...

(Still, could be worse. It could have been a vampiric nine-headed hydra... with a spiked chain... :) )

Hm. None of our players have gone the Exotic route, except for the bard in the Dalelands militia game who took his proficiency in whip (so he could trip criminals when they tried to run away). I also pitched the spiked-chain-wielding fighter build to a player once, but she didn't bite.

Our NPCs tend to stay away from them as well. Oh, wait, there was that one fighter who used a dire flail in a module we were playing through in our pickup hack-and-slash game. I laughed so much over that guy. This was 3.0, so the guy had just spent 3 feats just so he could be not all that great with what must be the dumbest weapon in the PH. I couldn't help but make fun of that NPC even before initiative was rolled.

...which he lost, by the way. He got mowed down by our combat monsters (who had spent their time and feats far better than he did) before he even got to act. Our GM later accused me of mocking the poor dumb bastard to death.

I'm pretty sure the only exotic I've seen has been the kukri, probably due to the player(s) going for insanely low threat ranges more than anything else.

I've been tempted to use the double axe/sword, but it doesn't really seem to be worth the effort. And, they would probably be hard to get ahold of; I've never seen any exotic (short of some dubious multi-d8 and -d10 weapons we weren't allowed to use...) in the hands of an NPC.

We've also seen very few polearms, only one whip (I can't recall if it's exotic, and it doesn't seem terribly 'strange'), and no scythes or sickles. It's pretty much just the standard swords, longbow, and heavy mace (the weapon of choice for all clerics I've ever run into) for all characters.
