Spit Poison - which mechanic?

I'm creating a monster which can Spit Poison on its enemies like some snakes. If the enemy is hit, then he must make his saves like from other contact poison. But I'm unsure, which mechanic describes such an attack best.

Of course it must a ranged attack, but is it a touch ranged attack or the normal variant? Can armor really protect from the venom?

And for a medium-sized creature, how far the monster can spit? 10 ft. is too low, but I can't decide between 15 and 20 ft. Next, can I say, that this weapon has a range increment of 5 ft. and a maximum range increment of 3 or 4 or that this weapon has a maximum range increment of 1 for the full range, so there no range penalties?

Check out the Naga. It as a special spit attack (this is 3.0):

Spit (Ex): A guardian naga can spit its venom up to 30 feet as a standard action. The attack ignores armor and has no range increment. Opponents hit by this attack must attempt saves against the naga’s poison, as above.

IMO, a ranged touch attack would be in order. As for range, 20' seems fine. That would be the maximum range, and there would be no range penalties.

I'm not sure for the Naga, but if you decide, whatever the range, that said range is too short, just make it so the creature would not provoke and AoO if he were to use his spit on a threatening target.

After some calculations I think I won't need to include the "no AoOs"-element. In the draft, as it stands, the DC for the save is 13 and the CR seems to be around 9. Characters without high Con-scores have a 50% chance of failing the save - 3 successful attacks and the chance of saving from the (temporary) blindness effect is only 12,5%. Beefing up is unnecessary, because this race goes after blinding of opponents into melee and their bite is poisonous, too.
