Spontaneous Metamagic Variant

Another problem arises with the +0 level feats, which normally can be used on every spell in a day easily; 3/day seems rather low in comparison.

Maybe I misunderstood, but doesn't this variant leave ALSO the ability to normally use those feats (at preparation and paying the slot increase cost) as many times as you wish, beside the free daily uses?

This system is a great improvement over the existing one. I agree that wizards get the shaft with metamagic feats. I had thought of other alternatives (like being able to cast +1 modified spells by giving up a 1st level spell slot, being able to cast +2 modified spells by giving up a 2nd level spell slot, etc.), but Thanee's, I think, is simpler and doesn't do any harm to the existing wizard.

I'll have to think it over for clerics and sorcerers and other classes though . . . .

Well, then what do you think in the light of this revelation?

I haven't thought about this anymore... :) But at least my suggestion of only 1/day attempts become definitely quite few. It's really hard for me to say how many uses per day will be fair! The advantage of the standard metamagic regarding uses/day is that since you "pay" for each use, the PC is chooses how many times can she afford.

With a fixed number but no cost I have to say I'm not very helpful :( I have used metamagic both as a preparation caster and as a sorcerer (the latter, definitely a lot) and I very rarely needed a single mm feat more than 2-3 times a day. Now that my sorceress is into the 2-digits levels, I have to say that I find myself using them more often than before, but can it be generalised that there should be more uses at higher levels? With the core rules that comes automatically from more slots.

In a way, not leaving the normal uses of mm alongside this new "free but limited" uses finds me very confused :heh:

BTW, did you see there is also a new thread about a metamagic variant? It's a different take , so you may not be interested, but I found it very good.

edit: ok, I have now noticed that you have noticed :p

We have been using the MetaMagic Feat method from Arcana Unearthed and it works like a charm. No math (very important since some gamers seem to have as much trouble with math as they do with spelling), no concern over what level spell it has to be, and no worry about "how many times per day you can use them." It works on the concept that you "laden" a spell; so if you want to use Quicken Spell on a Fireball, you use 2 third level spell slots to cast it. If you do not have enough spell slots left, you cannot use the feat. Simple and fast, no time wasted figuring out how it works.
I believe that the Maximize Spell metamagic feat is left out (I do not have the book in front of me), but otherwise the rest are there. There are spell templates that work the same way, but we have not included them as of yet.

Think about using it. With Grapple and Trip slowing the game down, who needs more math!

Happy Hunting.

@bladesong: I don't know AU very well (you do speak of Monte Cook's AU, right?), but from what you say it sounds like you simply use two slots instead of one with any metamagic feat regardless of level and you can apply them to any spell you can cast. I actually think this would be a horrible system balance-wise with the D&D spells and feats (I'm aware that in AU there are a lot of changes to the magic system, though I do not really know the specifics). I don't even dare to think about what this would do with Persistent Spell. ;)
