[Spycraft] New Air Vehicle revised!, 007 inspired [small spoiler]

Hi All,

Looking for some comments on this one. I was designing a scenario awhile back and I really wanted to have some sort of an aerial chase scene but couldn't find something that fit into the scenario.... that was until I saw the new Bond film. So I created my version of the "Switchblade" they use near the end of the movie. This is my first go for creating something for Spycraft, and I can explain some of the choices I made if anyone wants to discuss but I had to do a bit of "filling" in the blanks and going with what seemed to make sense.

Switchblade
Personal Delivery System, Fixed Wing Air Vehicle

The Switchblade was designed to fill the need to deliver agents who will jump into a hot drop zone, across enemy borders. Utilising the latest stealth technology the Agency developed a single man, sweep-wing jet that the parachuting agent lies in and flies over the target drop zone. The agent then activates the homing system and releases the Switchblade to begin freefall beneath the enemy radar. The Switchblade will then return to the aircraft its homing beacon is linked with. The switchblade has limited fuel due to its compact size, and is only capable of 15-20 minutes of flight. The switchblade is not equipped with landing gear of any sort, and will plummet to the earth, smashing to pieces if it runs out of fuel. It is equipped with a self-destruct mechanism to prevent the technology falling into enemy hands.

GP: 17
Size: Medium
Occupancy: 1
Handling: +10
Speed: 1,500 ft.
MPH: 150/300
Defence: 18
Wound Points: 75
Hardness: 5
Bonus Gear Points: 0
Qualities: OPT, SDS, STC
Gadgets: Autopilot, Self-Destruct Mechanism

Let me know what you think,

Cheers, Will

I definitely like this, and plan on using it..!

Cool, let me know how it goes, or if anything seems unbalanced! I am planning on using it in a chase involving that and then parachutes ;)

That was one of my favorite parts in the new Bond movie, actually. I think what I really liked about it is that, as a gadget, it felt SO American.

The British, they might have cool cars and watches, but us Americans, we have Personal Stealth Infiltration Aircraft that probably cost close to $100 million each.

Recovering them? We'd like to, but hey, it's only money. :)

Seriously now, assuming that the Switchblades can be return and be recovered, I wouldn't have them return to the launching aircraft. They're more likely to be akin to UPV/Drones, programmed to return to a safe landing zone and caught in a big-ass net.

That point was actually one of the most difficult things about adapting the "switchblade" from the movie to Spycraft stats.

My first thoughts is they would just self destruct. Then I thought it might be interesting in a chase if they had limited fuel...which also makes sense.... I thought once the person jumped they would self destruct to some degree, Then I thought they could autopilot and be caught in a net in the front of the launching plane.... etc. all in all I had too many options to choose from :D.... Thoughts like this are helpful to say the least!

The only thing with the size of the craft and potential fuel (not that I have a clue about aircraft fuel consumption) would result in a safe landing zone likely be out of range....

Ah, yes. THose were rather fun :). Good choice for conversion material.

GP is IMO too high. With the deliberate limitations on range and the obvious 'single use' nature of this vehicle, I'd bring the GP down on it quite a bit. The most expensive of the personal air vehicles is only 7 (an auto gyro) and while this does have awesome speed and the various stealth qualities, I doubt I'd price it at over 12 GP. Maybe 1 to 2 points less.

Mechanically you need to tag what sort of vehicle it is (I'd assume Personal Air Vehicle), and the OPT quality needs a percentage of cover provided (about 50% I'd guess). May or may not want to reduce handling slightly, and I'd point out in the write-up that it doesn't have any sort of enclosed environment, so you definitely ned eye protection and an air supply (neither included) when opperating this vehicle.

Looks good :). Excellent effort.

Hi Morgenstern,

Thanks for the praise and comments. I'll respond to your points above.

GP: That was quite difficult. I tried to price it between jetpack and a drone fighter due to speed and stealth qualities, and then added 7 due to the Autopilot and Self destruct mechanism costs. without the Gadgets I had priced it at about 10 GP. I see your point regarding the limited use perhaps offsetting the Gadget cost. Since there wasn't any guidelines on approximately what the qualities cost as well it was a bit difficult ;). I also based the GP cost so high since I figured most agents would end up trashing this expensive piece of Agency kit if they are anything like Bond and his watches or cars ;) haha. If your experience thinks it should be lower I can see it being set at 10-12 if you think the limited use offsets the gadets. What do you think about the 15 minute limit... too short? I was thinking even up to 30 mins (15 in to drop zone, 15 back)?

Ok, Continuing... I did tag it as a Fixed Wing Air Vehicle ;). The reason I chose this was based on the fact that Personal vehicles are guided by Balance and Dexterity, whearas the Switchblade is much more like a regular aircraft with it's sweep wings and engine.

OPT... whoops, that will teach me to skim entries! I will definately set it as OPT (50%)

Handling. I used the fighter stats and jetpack as rough guidelines, and put a thumb to the air on that. I'll keep it at 10 for now but might change if feedback indicates it is too high. I wouldn't likely drop it below 8 or nine based on the handling of a jetpack for example :)

Write-up.... Thanks for pointing that out. added it in. I'll repost the modifications. :D

Switchblade
Personal Delivery System - Fixed Wing Air Vehicle

The Switchblade was designed to fill the need to deliver agents who will jump into a hot drop zone, across enemy borders. Utilising the latest stealth technology the Agency developed a single man sweep-wing jet that the parachuting agent lies in and flies over the target drop zone. The Switchblade pilot is exposed to the open air since they lie on it much like one would a motorcycle. This results in the agent needing protective equipment for the eyes, and an external source of oxygen. This is usually a standard Military Aviator Flight Suit and Aviator Helmet. When the agent is over the drop zone he then activates the homing system and releases the Switchblade to begin freefall beneath the enemy radar. The Switchblade will then return to the aircraft its homing beacon is linked with. The switchblade has limited fuel due to its compact size, and is only capable of 20 minutes of flight. The switchblade is not equipped with landing gear of any sort, and will plummet to the earth, smashing to pieces if it runs out of fuel. It is equipped with a self-destruct mechanism to prevent the technology falling into enemy hands.
