Squares all the way. I'd rather deal with counting 5, 10, 5, 10, etc. going diagonal than messing with walls and rooms in hexes.

If I were to go for just measuring, I'd take a cue from the tabletop gamers and say no premeasuring. That is, you put your finger where you are moving to, then we measure to see if you can get there. Put your mark where the fireball is centered, then we measure.

Squares all the way...

For me, the big problem with hexes is that if you have, say, a wall with a door on it, and rotate it 90 degrees, then things like how many people can surround someone backed up against the wall, or how many people can get to someone standing in the door will change. In certain cases, these'll also vary depending on which particular 5' stretch you position a figure along, and how you decide to deal with partial hexes, which, unless you run all your adventures in irregular caverns, crop up a lot more often than partial squares.

Squres on a battlemat, plus lots of scenery and Dwarven Forge pieces, and my newest acquisition...

Helm's Deep. Fully painted from Games Workshop. Can't wait to unveil it to the PCs!

Our group has a habit of treating combat like a tactical board game, though, instead of fast-paced action. We have tried to change it, but we keep reverting back to old habits.

Same here, funny thing is though that before 3E we NEVER used any sort of combat mat or minis, just the occassional sketch to illustrate complex situations.

i have always preferred freeform. use the minis with a string and a tape measure.

but i'm not adverse to either hexes or squares.

squares make sense with the rules the way they are written.

That sums up my style exactly. Nothing like a chessex megamat to cover the table and lots of scenery. I use DF or some of the cardstock vendor creations, some of which are very nice - especially this guy's stuff:

Can you take a picture of an example of your setup?
