SQUEE! The rust monster revealed!

Personally I use a far harsher house rule for item creation so the rust monster converting items to residuum does not phase me at all, even if it created a lot more of it.

Of course, this whole residuum converter assumes...

a) Rust monsters are common enough for this to even be an issue.
b) Rust monsters are capable of thriving, let alone reproducing, in captivity.
c) The DM allows such absurdity, forgetting to follow Rule Negative One (the rule of common sense, which can overide even Rule Zero).

Obviously I am off the mark for even trying to extrapolate, but what I am interested is is not how efficient epic level heroes are at making items thanks to rust monsters, I am wondering if in a world where people use their brains, most wizards interested in making custom magic items out of unwanted ones will have a rust monster-supply so they can use a 100% conversion rate for residium.

That means not "wizards trying to make level appropriate items for epic heroes", that simply means "wizards who make those items the heroes used at heroic level".

Well, since it's an imaginary workld you can create any imaginary reason you want why not... (And some can be based on reality like how much does it costs just to keep one alive for any length fo time... how hard is it to breed them, do they survive in captivity for any length of time, are they "outlawed" by a generaly metal using populace?)

Aside from that... pretty much nothing makes much sense in the world of D&D.

Humans have shorter lifespans, less strength, less intelligence, less magical aptitude, but somehow we still usually manage to be the top race?

Magic can do all the things science can and more, and it's relatively cheap to use and yet most people STILL live a medieval lifestyle?

Adventurers are heavily armed, and generally ultra powerful, yet the nobility has no care whatsoever that they exist?

Peopel can teleport, fly, scale unscalable cliffs, yet the most common defensive building is a european style castle?

People can be resurected, healed, cured of diseases, etc, and the common populace isn't demanding it be made available to them at a cost they can actually afford?

People in a D&D world doing pretty much ANYTHING the same way we do things...

Sometimes in a D&D world you just have to ignore stuff because it's more fantasy to do so.

Huh. In my world you'll only be able to reap about 20% of that residium after expenses.

Am I saying that right?

In other words the 20% will all come out in the wash, farming rust monsters will be difficult.

Great idea guys, thanks!
