[SS] Solar, Planetar, Black Slaad, and LeShay level progressions

These certainly look interesting. I'm a little worried about the Leshey and the black slaad getting more hd than their ecl. I'm going to go over these with my group.

Well, the problem is that they're going off the listed ECL from ELH, which is incompatible with the SS rules.

For example, the LeShay would have to have at least 50 levels in its monster class (1 for each HD), plus whatever its level adjustment worked out to. I'd give a guess as +20 or so, based on ability scores, fast healing, etc. So, a LeShay should be roughly ECL 70.

Looks like they are progressing too fast. A monster's level progression should be equal to their total ECL. For example, an Astral Deva has an ECL of +20, so their level progression is broken up over 20 levels. What this means is that they don't always get hit die at each level, they don't always get improved saves at each level, and they don't always get skill points at each level.

It's still well formatted though, and whoever wrote it is on the right track. They just need to spread it out a little.

what are peoples opinions of the Solar?

Dragon Mag pegged the Solar at a 36. Personally, I figured it up at about a 31 or 32. Anyways, I'm running an Epic game right now with two 28th level characters, and the Solar would be quite cool for such a game, especially with a decent level progression breakdown. A third character, a Planetar, is about to join. Her ECL is about a 28 (I pegged the planetar at about a 26), so she's a perfect fit.

If the game is epic, and high enough level, both the Planetar and Solar make excellent cleric/fighter types to supplement a party.

50d6 hit dice by L32?

The tarrasque is a 80 or so, according to that one dragon article. Monsters from the epic level handbook probably belong in that range.. especially when they have even more hit dice than the Big T does.

Hmmm, I wonder if there is a level progression out there for a tarrasque? I want to play a tarrasque! I want to play a tarrasque! I want to play a tarrasque!

I know, there is no such thing as "a tarrasque" only THE TARRASQUE!

But still...

I spent some time looking at SS, and at the Leshay example. I don't think 32 levels is quite enough, but I would think that 70 or 80 levels to be way too much.

With 50 fey hit dice, a leshay has a BAB of 25- the equivalent of a 33rd level cleric. The cleric has more spell-casting ability, but presuming that epic feats were used to acquire high level spell slots, and these slots in turn were burned to acquire spell-like abilities; presuming also that a lot of (double or triple empowered) buffing spells are in place, then the comparison doesn't look too bad.

I would say 36th level, but I would assign the character treasure as if he were a monster, and not use the PC wealth tables.
