Stacking Prestige Spellcasting?

Been a long time since I played and I'm having some trouble supporting a build I want to do. IIRC, you can use one prestige class to add to another spellcasting PRC. So, you could be a Bard/Sublime Chord and then add another arcane PRC to advance the Sublime Chord progress, not the bard progression.

Is that still allowed? No end-of-print-run errata that makes that unworkable?

Thanks!

I believe so, but only up to a total of 10 levels. I don't think you can go beyond that short of reaching Epic level (at which point the rules do something different anyway).

Sure you can do that, no problem at all. It's actually fairly common to use Virtuoso to top off the last 8 levels of a Sublime Chord build.

Any idea how the spellcasting progression works once you're above that 10th level? Is it 5/4/4/4/4/3? Or something else?

If they're using the standard copy-and-paste rules, the text would be:

When a new [PrC] level is gained, the character gains new spells per day as if he had also gained a level in a spellcasting class he belonged to before adding the prestige class. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained, except for an increased effective level of spellcasting.

If the base class does not exist past 10th level, I think there are simply no new spells per day to be gained. You don't get any progression, because the progression doesn't exist. The character would, however, still get an increase in caster level.

Yeah, that's what I thought.

Actually, Sublime Chord cannot be entered prior to 11th level, so any spell progression beyond 10th would already be inside epic territory, where it gets funky anyway.

It's still useful to ask though because some fast progression classes like Ur-priest and Divine Crusader can be entered before 10, and thus their casting could be taken further than the game was meant to support..

Agreed, we always capped out the Ur-priest once the 10th level of casting was reached. If you have Wiz5, Ur-Priest3, you would max out your Ur-priest casting at the 7th level of Mystic Theurge at least with respect to the spell progression. You would still get the 'one-half of his levels in other spellcasting classes' as you progress Wiz or a prc for the Wiz.
