Staff reviews of EN P's books

Crothian

First Post
It started that Staff Reviewers were not going to review ENP's books because of a conflict of inters or an appearence of one. A few months back that was lifted, I reviewed two products and no one seemed to mind as I heard nothing about it. Today I reviewed another one of theirs, admit in the review a possible conflict exists, and so of course I hear from people.

So, I'm just curious what you all, the good people of EN World, think about this. THanks!! :D

Back when I bought products I was heartily annoyed that the reviewers I knew the most about (the staff reviewers...) didn't review these products. So I'm glad to see you guys doing this.

Of course I'm not getting in enough gaming to justify new material, but that's ... well... immaterial!

PS

I have no problems with it at all.
Matter of fact I expect it because I believe staff reviewers will be held to a closer scrutiny and more accountable when reviewing EN P material.
I trust the staff reviewers to be non-biased and do an honest review.
If they did not I think it would come out after a while when people started getting the product and it did not live up to the review by a majority of the buyers.

Well, I'll be reviewing another one of their products before the weekend is done so maybe that will bring out some people's opnions.

I think everyone can see the potential for bias, but respects the reviewers enough to know their integrity will shine through. That certainly is my attitude.

Staff reviews or not, I find it suspect that EN Publishing is in top 20 leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else, including Malhavoc press (which is otherwise considered the top PDF publisher), with 4 best products.

But hey I'm a Monte fanboy anyway, so what do I know? :heh:

But you'll note that it's not staff reviews driving those numbers, it's fan submitted reviews.

Go to the Malhavoc boards and encourage more people to submit reviews. The main problem I see is that Monte, along with RPGObjects and a few others, have multiple product entries for basically the same product. The Book of Eldrtich MIght I print is almost the same as the PDF in terms of content.

Yep, I've noticed that. I tried to imply that staff reviews weren't essential in the scores ("staff reviews or not").

Nah, I don't care about Malhavoc scores that much; not a penny invested in that company. I'm just pretty sure that there exists a double standard for professional outlets like Malhavoc and fan-driven publishers like EN (who now are professional too). Reviewers give much more leeway for smaller publishers (ie give a 5 for a product thats not perfect, just good, while any mistake in a Malhavoc products disqualifies it from 5/5 rating.).

Of course thats only apparent in the average scores, over multiple reviews, so it's hard not to do so, or correct it.

I think those of us who know you and Psion at all know oyu are above that sort of thing. Those that don't might wonder. :)

Like I said, I know the staff reviewers probably haven't done it, at least intentionally. I just suspect that a Malhavoc product with the serial numbers filed off and published under 'Parents Basement Dude Games Press' would get higher reviews, on the average, than the same product published by Malhavoc.

Anyway, ratings aren't the meat of the reviews, so it's no biggie.

.. I could also be wrong :p
